Yanna has epilepsy

Post by nvalleyvee »

She had a grand mal seizure today. She is 1.9 months old. It was her first grand mal THAT I KNOW OF! It scared me. I knew she was having a seizure and I was trying to help her through it like I used to help my Aunt. I just never remember them lasting so long.

Yanna has had 3 little episodes of "fall down can't get up for 1 minute" THAT I KNOW OF and the vet had said let it go without meds and see how she does. Well, I was done in this time. I swear it lasted 5 minutes. The peeing on herself at first then the mouth foaming, then the eyes rolling in the back of her head, all combined with great bodily seizure activity. I thought she was going to die.

I rushed her to the vet when it was over and she was just as much a pup as she always is when he saw her. She is now on 1/2 grain of phenobarbital 2 times a day for the rest of her life. Well she is on that much until we know how she responds - gorked out - too much, has another seizure - too little.

I can imagine how much that scared you! Hopefully, the medicine will work without having to make to much adjustment.

Having never seen a seizure in a dog (human, yes, but not dog) I would have freaked. Good for Yanna that she has you instead of me. :o

Thanks Peg. We have to keep an eye on her for the next several weeks. The vet said to look for signs of epilepic seizure - even outside - like poop where it normally isn't. We have to make sure to med dose isn't overpowering for her. She should still be torpedo head at play. When it happened today - BTS had to shut off the stove - we were preparing lunch - he was white faced and teary eyed. Big strong BTS. Love him.
