A parish priest in Couny Clare in Southern Ireland yesterday risked the wrath of the Roman Catholic Church authorities by openly expressing his disappointment at Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger becoming Pope Benedict XV1 and criticising the Church's celibacy laws.
''What we need is less talk, more listening, we have had enough talk. I find it hard to see that changing now with this new Pope'' he said.
He didn't think the choice of Ratzinger was going to address the existing problems ''when you think of all the theologians in recent times that have been silenced, people might have spioken to the malaise we are in right now, it doesn't auger well for the future'', he said.
On the subject of celibacy, the priest said, Celibacy would be better if it was optional, something imposed is about control. Celibacy is not necessary for the priesthood'', this celibacy rule robs priests ''of the rounding off you get from being part of a family, from the kids and from the wife. The celibacy rule is doing damage to people's lives, he said.

I always thought a priests family was the church, and he was married to god, dont they wear a wedding ring?

This is a very long-standing theological debate. Should religions `change with the times, listen to what their followers want, and adapt to modern circumstances` or should they `hold that what they consider to be truth is absolute truth, therefore no compromise is necessary and it`s the people themselves who must change." Any Catholic - please read ALL of David Lodge`s novels to see this argument humourously expanded upon.

I would like to sound like I know what I'm talking about but I am not Catholic, Christian, or anything else, so take everything I say as someone who is stupid on the subject of how religion dictates (effects) peoples personal lives. I've always thought the different religions acted as dictators to their followers in respect to how they must conduct their personal lives - whether it is the head of the church or the person sitting in the pew. My humble opinion is that we all need to treat each other with respect and kindness. Don't step upon another person for your own gain etc. etc. I know family is one of the most personal bonding experiences in humanity. It is through the family we learn how to conduct ourselves with others. It is also through our family we learn about our personal boundaries. I have never understood why a person is not allowed their choice as to how to live their life - in the best way they believe - and be denigrated before their God for it.

I am a firm believer that the church had better review its doctrines and dogmas. Both are human constructs that in many cases do not reflect at all the message and life of Jesus Christ.

I believe that cult Opus Dei is in complete control of the Roman Catholic Church today. And that Church is slowly slowly disintegrating in Europe.

I visited my opthamologist yesterday and the news was not good. My poor eye is worse. My "good" eye is developing more "bubbles" that will bread as aneurisms and damage more of the retina. In addition my "good" retina is definitely thinning in places and they will in all likelihood develop into retinal holes thus making reading even more difficult if not impossible.
Will stay on as long as I can though. I don't give up easily.
I thought there were some changes as the reading is getting a little harder.
