Hi Helen ! Were you thinking of Clovelly, North Devon ?

Where you cannot get vehicles down into the village, and you have to leave your car at the top of the hill and walk down. The beer is delivered by wooden 'sledge' with the drayman hanging on for dear life with ropes, as it tries to run away from him down the cobbled street !

The road in the foreground is called 'Upalong', and if I remember rightly, below the pub it's called 'Downalong' ! We stayed at a B & B (the first on the left in the piccy) during our honeymoon.

to be honest kay, i havnt got the feintest idea why !! i can only imagine that the country cottages and houses, specially the older ones, were like this because it was easier to keep a smaller room heated in the days of coal and wood fires.

i watch these programmes every day and spend my time thinking " if only "

been a country girl all my life but now im living in a big town, surrounded by concrete and tarmac and apart from the luxury of the shops on my doorstep, i dont really like it much.

back in the 1800's the buildings long were long and low, animals at one end and family at the other and animal foodstuff in the attic so i suppose another reason for low ceilings is that these houses have been renovated and added on to over the years.
