I got an email today and to hell if it causes a row here I cant let this one go.Looking at it has had me in tears.I cant show you the pictures here but if anybody wants to pm me with their email addy I will indeed send the details on...but beware its not a pretty sight.The email itself reads as follows

An 8 year old child was caught in a market in Iran for stealing bread

In the name of Islam he is being punished, his arm will be crushed by a car,

He will lose forever the possibility of ever using his arm again

Is this a religion of peace and love?

Some of you here have also seen this email as I have sent it to you so these facts can be confirmed.What the hell is going on out there fgs.This has moved me so much and also angered me even more.

I have seen this email in all its gore and im appalled that society is treating its people in this way...Bugger religion, hes 8 years old, if he stole the bread it was obviously because he was starving. Why do that???, something so extreme that will ruin that boys life. At 8 years old he cant be held accountable for his actions.

I feel so angry about religion at the moment...Its causes so much upset.....Im glad im sticking to believing in just me!!!

p.s. Im entitled to my view, I know you will have yours of which I will respect so I suggest you have the curtesy to allow me mine.

You don't think that cultural understanding and tolerance might be the victim here, rather than the 8 year old?

What if you discovered that the emails were being sent to stoke the furnace of intolerance rather than to describe a real event?

The photo you say was left out...........how do you know that it wasnt taken at the beginning of that childs ordeal....dont believe all you read and hear....and yes Spot that works both ways you know.

I could be wrong, but ancient law over there is generally carried out in ancient ways. They still stone adulterers. I don't think they would use a car if crushing were the punishment, they'd use a big stone or something like that.

Besides, isn't punishment for theft amputation?

That's what I thought too.

I'm not convinced that it's a genuine story (sorry Carolly), it strikes me as yet another attempt to ignite anti-Muslim feeling. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Islam, I live in a Christian country, hold Christian standards, morals and beliefs but I really hate to see the tensions caused by the whole 'my religion is better than yours'.

Well none of us know certain things for sure and yet some seem to want to make an arguement over certain threads on here. A good debate is great but not when one of the parties just want to be right all the time.Again i repeat myself by saying I THINK what I see is real and if other people dont thats fine also but theres no need to be rude thats for sure.Also again I repeat myself by saying that I REALLY hope this is a "put up" job BUT if it isn't ..........that poor child.My thoughts only.Thankyou again Accountable for your comments.

This is very disturbing and I hope to god it is not true. Thanks for sharing this email Carolly, if nothing else it shows that something is amiss here.

If it is a publicity stunt, I would seriously question the minds of these people and this boys parents. To stand by and watch your child putting on a display like this is just damn right sick. And what signals/lessons are being taught this 8 year old. I just can't see myself saying, 'go on Lucy, pretend your arm is being crushed by the car - and really scream to make it look good'.

i understand where you are coming from..........i have gone into what they do in these countries and yes alot of it is ture and it is very sad and upsetting,some people take it on the chin and some like you and i and alot of people get very upset and that should be respected

Gill we fell out last night and that I have to tell people as I dont want them to think that your post I knew about.We will always be good friends I guess and have our little fall outs but saying that we will always be there for each other especially when they see one hurting.I appreciate your post Gill very much but quite honestly the damage is done and what he thinks of me is quite clear.He may have a job here to do but that does not give the right to out and out insult me.This is indeed one way traffic Im afraid. It hasn't caused a row but from your reaction to it when pointed out it is rubbish you do seem to be looking for one. Facts can only be confirmed if they are actually true, perhaps you should have done some checking yourself rather than believe all you read.

A few seconds thought would have led you to the conclusion that it was likely to be false. Not necessarily that draconian punishment might be used but such an elaborate method was ridiculous. It took me all of 30 seconds to find those links on the internet. It's also not true just because you got an e-mail telling you it was.

Either you are very gullible or you want to believe the worst of people.

Clearly your e-mail is from someone wanting to stir things up I would suggest you use your junk filter for all future ones.

I can't speak for spot but if someone comes on with such a provocative initial post asking what people think and then rejects out of hand any dissenting opinion then he asked a reasonable question. IMO he has no need to apologise.

Jim, I don't want to fall out with you over this but I'm a bit miffed to say the least. I sincerely hope that you are not serious and that you are just winding me up.

If you are serious however, I suggest you re-read my post and then think about what you know of me and count exactly how many times here I have offended people. I can think of once, unintentially I upset one of our Aussie contingent by using a word that has two meanings, I apologised, no harm done, no-one else noticed.

Now, it may be that because I'm in pain today, up to my eyeballs in work (yes I know I shouldn't be here but we all need a 5 minute break now and then) and stressed out that I'm seeing in this things that aren't there.

Just to point out, though, the crusades were not started by a 40 year old woman in Devon saying that she dislikes the tendancy for people to say 'my religion's better than yours'.

If you are trying to wind me up - then well done, you've succeeded and I'll get you back one day!

My response about Carolly being so eager for this to be true wasn't to her first post - I'd already commented on her first post. This is someone who can't discriminate between a site like Snopes and an anonymous email chain letter. My only recourse, apparently, is to find a web page which was removed from the Internet three years ago, written in Pharsi with no published English version, and having found it to translate the contents into English just because Carolley gives no credence to a site as respected as Snopes which stands or falls on the accuracy of every hoax it exposes?

I'll say it again. The original composer of the hoax email had a vile agenda. He knew what the photos were of, he invented a lie to explain what he wanted people to believe they were of, he circulated the email. From that point on, the entire responsibility for the damage this email causes to cultural relations is in the hands of the fools who pass it on to their friends without making even the slightest attempt to check whether the contents are true or not.

No, Gill, I've not been sat watching the thread, my daughter called round for a visit. Now, try hard to explain what it is that you'd like me to apologize for because I think you're spouting drivel purely for the sake of supporting your friend.

Ok, now I realise I only just joined recently, and so I’m not really sure whether or not it’s a bit cheeky for me to stick my oar in at this point, but¦

It really does get me annoyed when people write things like that email, but what also winds me up is the state of our media (if that’s the cause) which results in people blindly believing things like this. People are so quick to be outraged! It’s not so much that they don’t check the story, it’s that they can just believe it without a pause and don’t even think to check it.

No offence intended (oh how I hate that phrase), but I think it’s highly irresponsible to forward on emails like that, thereby allowing the message of tabloidesque fear and ignorance to spread. If you really do feel obliged to pass something like this on, surely it’s your moral obligation to at least spend at least a few minutes checking its authenticity first? It took google 0.33 seconds to tell me that that story was a fake – that’s not really a high price to pay to avoid spreading malicious and racist propaganda.

I'm fairly sure I'll have offended people by this post, but... well... there you go...

Your first post asked what people thought of the story. I said I thought it was a load of rubbish posting a link to make the point. To me it is obviously fake.

Since you so obviously believe it to be true then back it up with some facts as to why you do. Why do you believe it is true-is it merely that you want to believe it or do you have actual evidence to back it up.?

It's a reasonable question. If you won't answer then why did you bother posting? This is after all a discussion forum.

Let's give Carolly a huge helping hand here. If the story's true there will be at least a reference to it on the Amnesty International annual reference report on Iran. It'll be very easy to find, they'll highlight the "8 years old" bit. The flip side is that it's inconceivable for "An 8 year old child was caught in a market in Iran for stealing bread; In the name of Islam he is being punished, his arm will be crushed by a car, He will lose forever the possibility of ever using his arm again" to be true and Amnesty not to mention the event. Does that sound a reasonable suggestion?

Has it become important to find out wether this is true or not so that we know for sure if it is true or not?

Or is it important to find out who is right and who is wrong?

Im thinking you dont need to make a person feel bad because they dont think of things in the same way you do.

You dont need to make a person feel bad because they dont react in the same way you do.

in fact you should go through life trying your hardest not to make a person feel bad.

This may not be relevant, but its just my thoughts.

im not really discussing whatever is the issue here, im saying that however strongly you feel, im sure a point can be made without belittling, or insulting a person.

I have nothing against Carolly at all, she's a greater asset to the site than I could hope to be. I have a terrible problem in that I don't think two opinions necessarily balance each other in weight, I think the basis for each opinion can make one more valid than the other. It matters to me that the email is recognized to be the deliberate hoax intended to fuel anti-Muslim prejudice that it blatantly is. Tearing down cynical lies takes longer than telling them.

I think what was upsetting, was your comment that Carol was so eager for it to be true. ( i think i would be hurt if people thought i was eager for something like that to be true)Carol had already posted that she did indeed hope it wasnt true.

Also not ALL of my comments on here have been directed to you Spot. i realise you hold a strong opinion on this matter, but seeing that didnt make me hate muslims. Different countries/ cultures/religions have different laws thats the way of the world. Some of them may seem horrendous to us, but still i dont hate those people:-3

We cannot all find our way around the internet as fluently as you and others obviously can. It would have been a little more charitable of you, had you borne this in mind before you unleashed your Howitzers.

You may not appreciate that there are some of us who are very sensitive people - we see a report about something absolutely horrifying, that has happened in this world and we emotionally react to it ! There are obviously some people who do appreciate this, but use that knowledge to further their evil agendas through the innocence and naiveté of such sensitive and emotional 'victims'. These scheming troublemakers also rely on the fact that many of their 'victims' will not be aware that there are ways of checking the truth of the 'information' that is sent to them.

I apologise for suggesting that you were 'sitting reading the thread' when, as you say, your daughter came to visit. However, for the safety of your PC and protection from potential hackers, it might be politic to log out of the internet at such times. Apart from that, I consider your last paragraph was sarcastic, patronising and rude.

Oh, and by the way Mr. Spot, I will always try to support any friend of mine who I think is being treated less than fairly. It is not supporting for the sake of supporting, it is supporting over an injustice done to my friend. My words were "What's so fascinating is that you're so eager for it to be true" in reaction to her continued preference for the email's accuracy after being shown the Snopes page. It hadn't occurred to me that my words could be misconstrued into a wish that the child had actually had its arm destroyed by an Islamic court. I think that would be a strange interpretation of my words. The "IT" to be true was the email, not the harm to the child. I apologize for expressing myself so clumsily.

Ok.......deep breath...When I get an email, I never think ahhh this isnt true I'll google it or snope it or whatever, unless of course its an obvious one for bill gates to send me money which I just delete...Now:rolleyes:

I am quite gullible in real life and maybe I should get a bit more savvy and check everything out, trouble is that doesnt come natural to me so for that I apologise.

If you had read carols email to me this morning, the feeling she had put in that email, the utter stomach churning feeling that a country could do that to an 8 year old, you would see that she posted it from the heart. I posted my reply from the heart to what I also believed to be true at the time.

In future to stop all this heartache of course we must be more vigilant and NEVER post anything we cant back up 100% as being fact. So yes ill stick to posting crap that needs no dictionary, encyclopedia or fact link.

However as we are all human and are known at times to making mistakes, if such occurance does happen, can I suggest a reply that just says...Awww bloody hell chezzie, thats on scopes and its saying its a hoax, sorry you got sucked in. Maybe you would like to read it for yourself. So much nicer way and feelings wont get hurt.

Sorry once again for posting before I checked something out.
