For every smile in the world

There's someone out there crying

And each time something is borne

There's something dying

Still the rivers keep flowing

And we don't know what it is

And we don't know where we're going

For every sunny sky

There's a sky that's grey with warning

And in the darkest night

Somewhere it's morning

Still the winds keep blowing

And we don't know what it is

And we don't know where we're going

Bound together by something

And we don't know what it is

And we don't know where we're going

And we don't know where we're going

Hiya everybody !!!!

Donna, Pam, Carol, Joan, Chris, Chezzie, KAZ ! and Kathy Ellen, I hope you have all had a good weekend:-6 :)

When we first bought our Charter/Trip boat business, there was a lot of work to do to get it up and running. We bought the boat, an ex-estuary ferry boat capable of carrying 90 passengers and 4 or 5 crew, in the December and started straight away with cleaning, painting her upper works, and of course all the mechanical checks, servicing. We also had to find a suitable store/office, fit a telephone, wire it up for electricity (which I did !), organise stock, organise leaflets and advertising, publicity etc etc. We had sold our house to finance the business, so we had no where to live! We travelled to the Norfolk Broads to check out all the ex hire boats that were being sold off at the end of their season, and we found a lovely broads six berth wooden cruiser at a very reasonable rate. She was perfectly sound throughout and would make an ideal 'living' boat for us, so we had it 'shipped' to the River Trent where we had already secured a mooring. Hence the need for an 'office' on land.

Enquiries started coming in by the beginning of February, and one of those was from a 'Round Table ' group who wanted a two hour cruise at the end of February! There would be about 12 men and their wives, and they wanted a small barrel of Marston's Bitter. I enquired at Marston's Brewery at Stoke on Trent, and was told they could supply a wooden keg (about 5 gallons) and they would supply a spigot (tap) for us to knock into the barrel so we could pour pints straight from the wood.

We thought this would be an ideal charter to start us off and get us used to how things went. Not too many people, so they could all be down in the saloon out of the cool evening air.

We got the boat up from our ‘residential’ mooring to the ‘loading’ jetty. We had taken delivery of the barrel and it was safely on the bar, so my hubby Chris proceeded to carefully knock the spigot into the barrel where the bung was. As he was carefully knocking the spigot to push the bung into the barrel, the spigot broke (it was only made of wood) and we lost about a pint of beer before we could lay the barrel on it’s side with the hole now on the top.

Catastrophe ! I dashed to a nearby phone box (this was before mobile phones) and phoned the brewery rep. for advice. He said he’d ring back asap. Time was ticking, we had about an hour to sort this out. He rang back within about 5 minutes and I had to go to a pub in the City centre where I could collect a brass spigot from the landlord. I was thankful I had driven my car to the jetty while the others brought the boat up. I managed to collect the replacement tap and everything was sorted and ready for the guests when they arrived.

The evening went very well, and everybody was well happy! The fellas hadn’t managed to polish off all the beer, no surprise there, and fortunately I had stowed several 3 litre polythene bottles so they could take the rest with them. I had insisted they paid for this beer in advance as we could not possibly have kept any that was left, in good condition for over two weeks - it was Marston’s Pedigree after all !

It was a very successful evening, that may have been a disaster. We felt that we had completed our apprenticeship very well! That same group booked charters on our boat every year after that, till we ceased trading eight years later!

WOW Gill, that looks awesome. I'd have loved a ride of your boat !!! Even without the Marsdens.

G'day Carol !!! Glad your voice is getting better. I read that in the thread a bit ago. Didn't realise you'd had a problem. Look after yourself, please. We need your songs.

Kaz - España !!!! (Pam draws herself upright, her um lungs thrust forward, her face haughty - as if she's just chomped on a lemon - and with a zapateado of heels, a flounce of frilly skirt, a rose clenched between her teeth, and a click of castanets... she's off.) Arriba arriba or rather, olé !

My partner is going to explore Spain, Portugal and North Africa in April. He's never been there. Awesome!

Morning all,

Got up early & went for a walk this morning, easing back into walking.

I feel great after the walk.

Hope you are all fit & well.

37.c here today so I am venturing no where after midday.

Our grandson is staying with us,so we are catching up on movies.

I watched "Stomp The Yard" last night, enjoyed that.

Have a great day :-6

An elderly couple was in bed one night and the woman woke up from a bad dream.

She was scared and panicking. Her husband awoke and turned the light on to calm her.

He asked what was wrong. She said "I had a dream that I died and you got remarried." she asked him "if I died tomorrow would you get remarried?" he said "sure, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life lonely." then she asked "well would you two live in this house?" he replied "sure, we just got finished paying off our mortgage." she asked again, angry now "well would she sleep in this bed?" he snickered and said "yes, of course, this bed is brand new and expensive, there's no reason to rid of it." she asked irately, "well would she use my golf clubs?" he replied with a straight, serious face "no. She's left handed."
It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice.

Hello all ! Busy on here today !!!!!

Come back Kaz and Kay pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez

Had a busy weekend myself. Got to take our German Shepherd Rex to his 'doctor' to check a tooth which appears to be giving him some annoyance. It may be an abcess, in which case he could have antibiotics, but if it needs to come out, Rex will have to have blood tests prior to anaesthetic. I expect the vet will put him on antibiotics to see if that will sort it out, first and also to get rid of the infection prior to extraction. Hope his tests will be OK - he is 11 years old. But fortunately he is very fit for his age.

The weather is sunny at the moment, in the Midlands, but quite windy, and the clouds are blowing across the sky very fast. Temp. is about 10C.

I've done a bit more 'sorting' this morning, and will take the afternoon 'off' because of the visit to the vet.

Oh what a lovely area I live in ! The other day there was a car chase along our road, after it had got dark. A small dark car with no lights showing went tearing by our house, just missed our car, was being chased by a police Volvo Estate with his blues and twos on. The small car nearly lost it when he went round a curve in the road and it sounded like he'd side-swiped a parked car, but it didn't slow him at all ! They both disappeared out of sight, but you could hear the high revving engine of the small car as it careered down another residential road towards the main road. I expect he got caught before he went much further.

Never a dull moment here! Still it makes a change from youth gangs loitering outside!

Have a good Monday :-6 ;) :D

Thanks Carol for your wishes for our Rex dog :)

We went to the vet, and as I thought, Rex was put on a course of antibiotics and we've got to go back next Tuesday morning for a check. Depending on that outcome, it will probably be decided whether to extract the tooth - which the vet wants to avoid if possible, or to leave well alone for the time being to see if the infection recurs. Rex had a manicure while he was there and a general MOT. The vet was very impressed with the dog's general health, certainly for an 11 year old German Shepherd ! Here endeth the health bulletin on His Lordship Rex :wah:

Well the blinkin weather aint anything to write home about - pissistantly now and blowing a hooligan!

I suppose I'd better see what Her Majesty is on about in these tournaments, and if it aint a game I like, I aint gonna play, so there phthththththththth ! :sneaky: :-3

Hi Donna !!! I'm surprised to see you posting when you did Mrs. cos you're usually posting after midnight our time ! Take no notice of Mrs Posh, you just post what you like, she's only jealous :D

FIREMAN came home from work one day and told his wife, "You know, we have a wonderful system at the fire station: BELL 1 rings and we all put on our jackets, BELL 2 rings and we all slide down the pole, BELL 3 rings and we're on the fire truck ready to go.

From now on when I say BELL 1

I want you to strip naked.

When I say BELL 2

I want you to jump in bed.

And when I say BELL 3

we are going to make love all night.

" The next night he came home from work and yelled

" BELL 1!" The wife promptly took all her clothes off.

When he yelled "BELL 2!", the wife jumped into bed.

When he yelled "BELL 3!", they began making love.

After a few minutes the wife yelled "BELL 4!"

"What the hell is BELL 4?" asked the husband?

"ROLL OUT MORE HOSE," she replied "

YOU'RE NOWHERE NEAR THE FIRE:wah::wah::wah:;)

Hi Chris, perhaps you'd tell Carol, I've been sat waiting for her to give me a shout, as I'd said earlier to her. Haven't seen anything, no orange 'flag' nothing.

Hiya Donna!!! Lovely to catch you matey, my hubby is a better cook than me as well, although I'm bound to say I haven't burnt water yet, although I have given it a good try. I have burned hard boiled eggs though, cos I forgot I'd put em on, for sandwiches one time. OMG the stink !!!

Hope you're OK, and not showering too often with the five-a-side !!:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl
