This is what i think -

if the recipient is a tv star, they are paid for waht they do, although they may also do a lot of charity work as well in which case it is right for this to be recognised.

If the recipient is a dinner lady who is paid for the work, that doesnt mean much, nice though it may be to say you had the award..

If the recipient is a dinner lady who has gone beyond the call of duty, making a difference beyond the basic role she is paid for - then that means a lot to that person to be recognised.

Bravo Lemon:D

Also are there any ordinary people getting these awards this year. i mean the women who stand up to thugs and turn a terrorised estate around, or the man who delivers meals to old people every sunday out of the good of his heart.

At work i often turn in a good piece of work and am thanked or otherwise commended for it.While it is nice to be praised, i recognise that this is the work i am paid to do.

Last year however, I was asked to help a team with work i was unfamiliar with, with people i had not worked with before, in an unusually tight deadline, with a target which had to be met.

This i managed and we came in above target after a tense couple of weeks. This we were actually awarded a company award letter for. This meant a great deal to me, as I could have said at any time that i actually had other work and didnt want the additional hassle.(Company award letters are rarely awarded - it is only a letter with your name stating that the company recognises your contribution, but you have do something exceptional to get one).

Now if they gave out the letters to everyone who did a good piece of work, they wuold eventually become worthless because everyone would have one.

Thats good that the company recognises work beyond the call of duty though, its nice to feel appreciated for the work you do. Yes you get paid and its your job, but still its nice to say hey you are doing your job well:D

My opinion, for what it is worth is that these honours lists are now meaningless. It used to mean something to get a knighthood or an OBE, but the whole 'honour' has been devalued so much. Its like the Oscars - just 'luvvies' patting each others backs. Not enough is being made of the 'unsung' heroes of this country, the people who go quietly over and above the call of duty 'just because they WANT to', not doing it for reward or gongs and not expecting any. I believe that a lot of the people who receive these honours actually expect to receive an honour. These honours have mostly become worthless.

signed Sir Fire ........................................ stupid isn't it?
