Shot At Dawn
there are a lot of appalling things about ww1, it's hard to imagine todays generation allowing themselves to sucked in to that kind of war. One of the most poignant events was the christmas truce of 1914 when the troops at the front decided to stop fighting much to the fury of the commanders on both sides.
It's one of the reasons why the on going debate of whether the teaching of history should just be about teaching the crucial events or should you teach kids to go deeper and look at the story behind the story as it were keeps being revived. Is teaching the story of the labour movement or social history just as important as what the kings and queens were up to. The victorian era was a great age of hypocrisy as well as achievement. The more you dig and question the less some people like it. Even nowadays there are those who pretend events thirty years ago have no bearing or relevance on what is happening now.
