Red's thread made me think of this. What was the "in" thing when you were in highschool. For me it was Big Johnson t-shirts and yo mamma jokes. :wah:

we had to wear a uniform, but the girls tried to get away with as short a skirt as possible, with taking their ties off, although this was a punishable offence, and wearing stilettos instead of flats.Goth black makeup was in, although if they were caught wearing cosmetics, the teachers would drag them to the bathroom to wash it off.But I was very good and never did any of that.

I don't think I would of liked wearing uniforms either. Espicially if you had to wear skirts! Bleh! :wah:

And we would watch films like Footloose and Back to the Future at the pictures (movies) and we would wonder if it was really like that in American schools - our English education system suddenly seemed rather restrictive.We would have liked to go to school dressed in our own clothes.

And we watched the american boys and girls going to school "in the same class!", and thought how depressing it was that we had girls only schools, and that it was punishable to be seen in the street after school with a boy.

I was in secondary school in the late 80s, so it was the cure, the smiths, Top Gun, big hair and shoulders, the start of house music, Dungeons and Dragons, commodore and atari computer things, and of course girls.

I wore penny loafers in my 10th grade year, and nikes were a big deal too....My mom would make a lot of my clothes and I complained because I didn't have what all my friends had....looking back....I was so fortunate to have a mom that could sew like her!

I don't remember wearing the leg warmers, but they were the thing, and big hair....I had big hair...and the LL Bean boots (photo below) and mini backpack as a purse from LL bean also.

I blame my mother; she forced me to wear a lime green leisure suit in my last year of junior high (9th grade) and the shock propelled me into ten years of blind rebellion.

Its been so long ago...

8th-9th grade - mini skirts - big chunky heel shoes(thanks Elton) - Pee Coats

10-12th -Maxi Coats(to the ankle area) - bell bottoms - wedge shoe - straight hair

electric rollers were just coming out - so that made the late 70s to 80s BIG HAIR.

70s fashion in small town Oregon:

My cool best friend had LL Bean shoes. I always wanted a pair but alas my mother had not a clue about why I would need them nor where to get them nor money to give me for them.

I used to wear my hair back. Like this: take two strips of the front long pieces and pull them to clip them together at the back of my head with a barrett. Or I would pin my hair on top of my head and pull two long strands from the front down the sides of my face. Or one other style that was big was using the curling iron to curl just the front sides (see That Seventies Show). Very funny when I think back.

I loooooved boots, always wore boots and still do, along with short skirts. Back then I even wore go-go boots from time I was in elementary school. Never felt free enough to bare my middriff. Even though I was skinny thing never felt my belly was anything showy. Didn't like my belly button or something.

Oh that reminds me I actually did like levi cut-offs very short with the threads hanging and yeah I did like the top with elastic around the sleeves and right below the chest area. Also speaking of Levis we used to split the seam at the bottom of the jean, and opening the seam for that casual look. Another thing that was big when I was in high school was getting a suntan! Loved to sunbath. Try this in southwestern Oregon

. Let's just say my mom was never concerned I'd get skin cancer.

I don't think this was in but what was coming out were gays. I remember Scott B. who was gay and had loads of female friends in highschool. As soon as he graduated he went to San Francisco, became ill with AIDS, and died around 1985. :-1
