goodbye Djumbo

Post by Victoria »

I work as a home help and for the last year Ive been working with a family who had two dogs. The very first day I walked in I had to hold back a tear, Djumbo a cross Bouvier was the spitting image of my beloved Max who died in my arms on july 24 2001. The dog took to me too I think he kinda felt the connection(?).

The lady of the house always joked that he was half my dog and that he needed me there just as much as she did.

well on dec 5 she took him and his buddy for a walk as normal. ( Ive posted before about our towns very unfriendly stupid rules for dogs) Over the bridge to the left is dog walking field to the right is sheep grazing... Someone had left the fence open and djumbo ran into the sheep field.and he started running after them and pulled a leg or two, one of the sheep got injured, (this was a game he played with the other dog chasing and grabbing each others legs) the police were called, the dog brigade were called, the farmer was called, and she was told 'you take the dog now to the vet and have it destroyed or we shoot it here and now' she asked if the kids could at least say goodbye and she was going to call me, but she was told no it had to be immediate.

I know that its the rule in the countryside I know that worrying sheep is serious I know that dogs can do a lot of harm to sheep.

I just think there has to be some flexibilty this was an 18 mth old dog, he had never done anything like this never bitten or even growled at anyone, the gate had been left open by someone else, and what idiot said dogs left ,sheep right and thought that it was always going to work out ok?

The lady has said she would pay for the damage the loss of the sheep the vet bill the police bill ect ect but our police said rules are rules and he had to die..

I am devestated seeing him and walking with him twice a week (more during the summer) it was like having a little bit of my Max back again..She told me this on Thursday and next tuesday morning I have to go to her house knowing he wont be there, people think Im nuts it wasn't even my dog but he was very special.

And I will miss him....:-1

My God what ignorance. We have the same attitudes out here my way. Stupid farmers seem to think they have the right of way with their sheep. I am so angry reading this, that people could be so bloody stupid and blackhearted as to do such a heinous thing. I hope they go up in flames for what they have done. May they suffer the rest of their rotten days. They deserve nothing less. I am so sorry. :-1

In England things would have differed in that the owner of the dog would have been fined. The dog would only have been put down if the dog had been unaccompanied or was considered a "dangerous dog" which involves more than just worrying sheep. Livestock Socialisation Classes are available here to acclimatize dogs to sheep and restrain their natural instincts before problems occur. Anyone walking unleashed dogs into a farming environment in England would do well to consider taking them.
