This was all an elaborate ruse to see if you can handle having your leg pulled. You passed with flying colors. We have a strict code around here, that if you don't have a sense of humor and can't take a little razzing we burn you at the stake. Whew for a sec there I thought you were a goner.:wah:

Welcome and enjoy the mayhem..

Jimbo sits at his desk in a stupor,

his brain starting to decompose,

And there on the end of his finger,

Sits a bogey, picked fresh from his nose.

He fiddles around with the bogey,

Pulling it this way and that,

Then he hurls it towards his computer,

Where it lands on his screen with a 'splat'.

He looks at the bogey before he goes to bed,

Where it sits, now dried up, on his screen.

It's quite a big bogey, he thinks to himself,

And really, quite pleasantly green.

No offense meant to you Lemon, but during the last few months there have been sooo many trolls or some unhappy former members logging on in different accounts. FG members opened up to them with heartfelt welcomes only to be fooled by the trolls. So now, some members are wary and keeping a careful eye on new members just to make sure they're not a troll. You can tell after awhile if someone is sincere or not.......it's like real friendships sometimes...true colors will emerge when one gets comfortable.

I observed 4 trolls at the FG during the last few months.....and their true colors showed, and now they're gone. But, sure and begorra they'll return and we'll be ready for them:guitarist

While this thread's quiet, can I drop in a couple of observations?

Firstly, I made exactly the same error of judgement last year over what turned into a tremendous poster from the Midlands called shelleybelle and I grovelled, I absolutely grovelled, the next day. She was very kind but I still wince whenever I remember being that idiotic and it's been a lesson to me ever since.

Secondly it's my considered opinion, after much thought, that there's no such things as trolls any longer. It's a term which applied and had practical meaning when newsgroups were at their height - say around 1994. They were full of earnest posters who'd kept their patch scrupulously clean and suddenly, within months of each other, Green-card spammers, feeble Kibo imitators and Armenian Genocide fanatics were fly-posting up their sanctums. It was not a pretty sight. The rule of don't react to trolls became a necessity once the amplifying effect of fifty outraged residents shouting in response to each intrusion was discovered.

Forums aren't like that. The investment of time involved in someone coming here and pratting about is far higher than buzzing a dozen newsgroups with a single cross-post. Anyone, absolutely anyone, coming onto a forum should be given as much room as possible to settle in and get to know people. Yes there are malignant returnees but if they get outed after fifty posts instead of five they still can't really hang around and just laugh it off and they've wasted a week for nothing instead of just a day. There might even be even sock-puppet accounts if people want to be extremely daft and talk to themselves. None of that is on the same level of concern as a willingness to engage what might well be contrary opinion in a civil manner.

We also get the odd poster registering just because they're bored and want a fight. That's not an abuse of the forum, it's a macho challenge. They can't be personally abusive (I speak of ideals here but we do try at least for that ideal) but they can stretch to the limit whatever bee they might have in their bonnet. It might even involve recommending the execution of eleven year old children who kill but it's still not trolling, it's opinion. If we could get out of the habit of ever using the T-word we might find that at least a small area of consensus exists between even the most polarized posters. Just because they're new and abrasive doesn't mean they're uninteresting. I was new and abrasive myself once and the fact that I could bore for England is irrelevant to my point. Some people might end up changing minds and that's a good thing, not a bad thing.

L&M's thread has been entirely the wrong place for me to say any of this in except that it's been lurched already. I'm sure it can get back on track in the morning.

back to the story... I somewhat sympathise with that.

I believed for a long time that I'd never fall in love again. I adored some people and greatly respected many more but had never stopped loving my boyfriend that I met when I was 16. It took me 20 years to realise that I'd never even known what love was until now. I had given up on all that. I fully expect that, now my plans of being a hermit have been shattered, I will learn more and more about love every year and every decade I'll look back at now and think how silly it was to have thought this great feeling was love in the fullest.

There is no trick to finding love. You don't even have to believe it will happen. It just does.

Just so long as everyone's fully aware that the term doesn't apply to lemon_and_mint that's fine, it wasn't remotely in reference to her.

Excellent advice, Koan. I feel for your situation and apologise for the misunderstanding, Lemon.

Perhaps, the fastest way of finding it is to simply stop searching?

Just a thought, if you really have heard this story before, and jj is male, maybe he is one of the people involved in the story, and told it from the other point of view?I'm intrigued now.

That was in another country and besides, the wench is dead.

Treat last night's nonsense as a bit of unavoidable rough and tumble. If you will go out with scruffs like us on the razzle you can expect the occasional bruise and a night in the lock-up. Just be thankful you don't have a hangover to go with it.

Actually, i have been taken in by people pretending to be other people on the internet, and I swear i will be more careful the next time, and yet i still get taken in, and try to say helpful things to people, and then later find out it was a joke.

It isn't funny at all.

Maybe one day someone is going to really need kind words said to them (you never know a person's personal circumstances as to why they may be looking for company) and I may just turn my back. That would be awful.

Thats why you sould stick to being yourself, if you try to help or give support to someone and they were just having a laugh at your expense, it dont matter. But if they are geniune,, it will matter:thinking:
