Venezuala says no to Chavez

and socialism. Democracy did work for once. But it's still along time till 2012, so we'll have to see if continues to work.

CARACAS, Venezuela — Humbled by his first electoral defeat ever, President Hugo Chavez said Monday he may have been too ambitious in asking voters to let him stand indefinitely for re-election and endorse a huge leap to a socialist state.

"I understand and accept that the proposal I made was quite profound and intense," he said after voters narrowly rejected the sweeping constitutional reforms by 51 percent to 49 percent.

Opposition activists were ecstatic as the results were announced shortly after midnight — with 88 percent of the vote counted, the trend was declared irreversible by elections council chief Tibisay Lucena.

Well I guess if Chavez abides by the result you can't really accuse him of anything un-democratic. He was voted in after all, and although I don't really agree with his worldview and he does get a bit ranty in these international discussion things, he does stick to constituional methods to work his policies at home, and he seems to have fairly genunine popular support among many venezuelans so I don't have much problem with him. Though maybe if he would humble himself and ask the US Republicans for advice they could give him a few tips on winning very close election results. ;)

I was just reading about this Chavez guy the other day in an article that quoted him as saying if the US tried to interfere in this situation, that he would withhold oil from us.

True he's done things the democratic way so far. I wonder how the voting was for the other items on their ballot. I know one of the items was making certain areas community property. I don't know what the certain areas where though.

found it.. it was all one referendum

The defeated reform package would have created new types of communal property, let Chavez handpick local leaders under a redrawn political map and suspended civil liberties during extended states of emergency. Without the overhaul, Chavez will be barred from running again in 2012.

Other changes would have shortened the workday from eight hours to six, created a social security fund for millions of informal laborers and promoted communal councils where residents decide how to spend government funds.

Here's a list of everything that was on the referendum.

No wonder he lost the vote, thats too many complicated questions for one referendum and far too much change at once. Though that said it was a narrow vote so obviously a lot of people over there agree with the ideas. Interesting.

How many people voted for the second set without considering the first?

Mixing such disparate items in a single vote is a cheap ploy as far as I can see.

I just had the utter thrill of reading an old thread just to remember what I'd written about land reform. Personally, I think redistribution of land is absolutely brilliant! Though it will anger certain countries who don't want socialist countries to be successful.

Read more about it. wikipedia's land reform entry
