The only thing about the 60's I know is I wasn't there. I was born 1970, and in my opinion, about 25 years later than I was supposed to be. :yh_peace

Well I was only born in '64. But I remember Josie & the Pussycats, smock dresses (for little girls), my mom always put my hair in rags at night so that I'd look like Cindy Brady. Oh yeah! The Brady Bunch! Gilligan's Island, Gomer Pyle, the Monkees, the Banana Splits. And the Jackson 5 cartoons. Living in Mississippi.

I also remember every Sunday evening, Mom would yell out the door, "KIDS, Disney's on!" And we'd come running! Do you guys remember how special it was each year the day The Wizard of Oz was on TV? All the kids would be talking about it in school! My father tried to make popcorn in a kettle for it one year & burned it & the kettle. We ended up sitting on the back porch for a good portion of the movie, because the house was filled with smoke. :wah:

I'd forgotten about this series...we watched it all the time...

The Cast

Sgt Joe Friday

Jack Webb

Sgt Ben Romero

Barton Yarborough

Sgt Ed Jacobs

Barney Philips

Officer Frank Smith (1)

Herb Ellis

Officer Frank Smith (2)

Ben Alexander

Officer Bill Gannon

Harry Morgan

The NBC series Dragnet featured the cases of Sergeant Joe Friday, an old-fashioned by-the-book cop in the LAPD.

This was the first American drama series to be screened on British television and was successfully revived in 1967 (this time in colour).

the 1960s...what do you remember ?

Post by Explorer the eighth »

I remember going to the barbers for a Beatles haircut and I had a Beatles poster on my bedroom wall. We used to have some of their singles on the Parlophone label such as "Help" and "A hard day's night". I wish that my father hadn't sold them, or whatever he did with them, in the 1980s or 90s.

We used to have a black and white television and the programmes were only shown at certain restricted hours of the day like tea-time and in the evening. The rest of the time would be either Test Card and music, or just nothing at all with a white spot in the middle. I say we should bring back the Test Card and music (sometimes called the trade test transmission), but it must be with the original music only. I don't think the girl with the naughts and crosses came in until the arrival of coloured television. I remember watching our first coloured television and there was only one programme on it. It was cars being driven around in the hills and mountains.

The televisions in those days were unreliable and we used to have the repair man out regularly to look at ours. One went up in smoke and it stunk the house out. The aerials were bigger in those days. I think they were shaped like a letter H, but I think that the smaller ones which are commonplace now started with coloured TV. My grandparents had a Redifusion television which was rented. It even had some radio stations on it too. People used to call the radio a wireless.

Just to change the subject, Hawaii 5-O didn't start until 1970.

The sixties was certainly a decade of contrast, one the one hand we have all that has been mentioned before when it was great to be young for you really did have the feeling you could change the world for the better if all you had was love.

On the other hand there was the Cuban missile crisis, Kennedy's speech which was broadcasted here in the early hours of the morning and the dreadful days that followed as the Russian ships got closer and closer to Cuba, and you really did believe a third world war was imminent.

Then of course the were the three assassinations John and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, but the decade closed with those grainy images of Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon, all in all the sixties was a fascinating time to live through.
