Here's something I don't remember seeing at FG before.

Spontaneous Human Combustion! What do you think? Is it possible? Is it a crock?

Definitely possible.

It can happen where someone who is carrying a fair amount of excess weight is wearing clothes made of an adsorbent material - usually after having had enough alcohol to knock them out.

Something sets light to the clothing over the chest / stomach - a cigarette or spark from the fire will do but it should be a slow fire. As the clothing burns the fat underneath melts and comes out through the burnt and broken skin. The clothes then act as a wick so you are burning fat, not fabric. Over time the body is consumed in a very localised flame leaving the extremities which, as well as being further from the centre of the fire also tend to have less fat to keep the fire going.

I have seen shows on tv on this. They are pretty freaky. I think they were on the health channel. It was weird, because at the end of each episode, they would show the body burnt and nothing else in the room is damaged.

You're saying that there's a series of TV programs in existence which has genuine footage of dead bodies prior to their being moved, and that these programs have been shown? I didn't know the world had degenerated to that extent, we might as well re-open the Coliseum and have done with it.

Just so I can look up some details and enter the conversation intelligibly, what are the programs titled?

Yes, It was called spontaneous combustion. At the begining of program, they have a disclaimer that this show is not for children. It was interesting, but, it was also scary to think these people were just sitting, then they just start on fire for no reason. They explain the whole thing on the show. How they think it happens.

Yes I can confirm that it can indeed happen, as this extract from my local paper "The Northumbrian gadgee", will confirm.

Rothbury Woman Explodes

The village of Rothbury is in a state of shock after a local woman exploded early on Sunday morning. Mrs. Violet Thrung was walking near Simonside with her sister Muriel. “I was taking her picture, she was sitting on a rock, then she went bang! said Muriel. Police, Ambulance and Fire crews attended the scene along with an Army bomb disposal team. “ It’s a complete mystery said Major Ronald de Bilious Mallard, “There is no trace of any explosive materials or devices at all. The Police have stated that they are not looking for anyone in connection with the incident at this time. The investigation is still at an early stage said Inspector Earnest Churney. Local separatists, The Snitter Marxist Independence Front, have denied involvement. It’s nowt te dey wi us a spokesman for S.M.I.F claimed. Mrs. Thrung, 67, was the widow of the late Arnold Chuffy Thrung, the world famous sheep whisperer.

How they think it happens.I've tried but I can't find it. There's a BBC August 1999 QED documentary which I think is a single hour-long episode in the "Science Mystery" series, and a one-hour episode in A&E's 1997 "The Unexplained" series. Other than those I can't find any TV series, and those mentioned are each single episodes. Do you have a rough date or a channel to dig with?

You think what's possible?

Bodies burn, I don't think anyone disagrees with that. You think there are circumstances when they're capable of self-ignition, is that it? The problem with believing that is nobody seems to have an irrefutable instance of it happening. What's the point of something being true if it never happens? Or have I guessed wrong and you believe something else?

http://www.aso.org.uk/portal.aspx?mlmen ... tionID=116 has a good breakdown of what it really is.

"The heaviest man in the world died recently weighing 465kg, with an estimated 66% of his body weight as fat"

Somewhere between that and "a typical healthy 70 kg man has about 12 kg of fat and 58 kg of lean tissue. This lean tissue includes about 42 kg water".

The point about the fat is that it's not thin-spread through the whole body like dripping on toast, it's concentrated. Where there's a high enough proportion, that bit of the body's inflammable to some extent. There's more than enough energy in the fat to completely boil off all the water if it can just get burned. Once you start the fat melting out onto a wicking surface the body will burn to ashes given long enough and a draught and being positioned right. What doesn't make much sense is the "spontaneously", most people would expect a source of ignition like at least a burning butt. Stop making jokes jimbo, I mean a lit-up fag.

I asked this question March 2005 and there was discussion------Here is one of my comments-------

The theory (developed by the F.B.I.) is that the body for some inexplicable reason will burn like a candle.

The case that I was involved in was 1963. A 60 year old executive, in a mountain home with no exterior signs of a fire, had been consumed by a fire that was limited to a 3 ft. by 4ft area of a tongue and groove oak plank floor. His 7 lbs. of cremated remains were beneath the flooring. He had weighed about 205 lbs prior. Sunday newspapers were on the floor, scorched, but not burned, televison set still on. Danish Modern chair with Kapok cushions was missing and presumed burned. Heat was so intense, plastic tooth brush handles in another part of the house were melted out of shape, sliding glass doors were cracked, as were most of the windows. No combustibles were found at the scene. There were no open windows or doors and it was presumed that the fire had consumed all the oxygen and then extinguished itself. After a lengthy investigation, the death certifcate merely said "Accidental Death".

I think I saw this episode of the "Twilight Zone".

I remember books from my childhood, they were filled with freaky facts including pictures. One was of a burned up body with only parts of the legs recognizable. They atttibuted this finding to spontaneous combustion but I was so freaked out by the pic I never looked into the phenomenon (sorry bad spelling) before.

I think it can happen.

Im not so sure the body doesn't have its own kind of intrinsic electricity; we know it has energy, but I would think under perfect conditions that it could ignite.

:yh_rotfl:yh_rotfl Not sure that would be spontaneous combustion, but close.
