For the last 15 year Ireland has boomed as an economy, if you are not aware of this they termed it ‘The Celtic Tiger’. These boom years are now slowing coming to an end and what is there to show for it:
Thousands of housing estates scattered all over the place over crowding small towns and absolutely no infrastructures in place, lack of schools, small houses that you can barley even fit a bed in a bedroom, and back yards you couldn’t swing a cat in.
A medical system that is completely falling apart (last week 7 women were contacted who had mammograms and were cleared, they were informed that there were errors made and that they may in fact have cancer and needed to be retested.)
A joke of a public transport system where in Monday the bus drivers are going in strike because 2 new bus routs won’t allow the drivers on the rout take there break where the depot gym is.
And to top it all off the government just gave themselves a 14% pay increase where the leader of Ireland now makes more than George Bush. Now they are telling unions and business to keep pay raises low this year so Ireland can stay competitive.
What a waste of years were the Government ran year after year with no deficit.

"small houses that you can barley even fit a bed in a bedroom"
Reminds me of my old bedroom at Ma and Pa's house. We literally had to bend the frame of a z-bed to get it to fit in there. When they extended the house the council said it was too small to be a bedroom...they renamed it as an office.

Blessed be.

Unfortunatly everything that milkenie has said is true, I am glad I don't live in Dublin, not that its not a great city, but a worse planned city in the past 20 years there has not been, its simply a disaster, in fact its such a diaster that the example of the east cost of Ireland's massive and unplanned over-development in the past 25 years is being used a the worst case scenario internationally of what "not to do" when you have the kind of boom we have had here in Ireland.
Now that said, there are of course huge aspects of whats happened in Ireland that are fantastic in that most young people no longer need to emigrate to find jobs, we are no longer in thrall to the Church, and our colonial past seems to not haunt us the way it used to and Ireland is more or less a model modern EU liberal democracy, but like milkenie said we do also have very severe problems, particularly related to infrastructure and service planning, a problem with serious and violent organized crime, a country that now has one third of its entire population living within a 50-km zone of Dublin who spend most of their days sitting in traffic jams!

I agree Mike & Galbally,
Trying to maneuver around Dublin is a nightmare. I used to ride the bus in from Leixlip to meet my cousins on their lunch break and the bloody bus would take so long that I would get off and walk the rest of the way into town:wah: tired but in good shape after the long walks.

Getting the bus in from the camp site was a nightmare - an hour journey to go maybe five or six miles.
Still, that was far better than driving in and not being able to have a few wets whilst listening to the music.

No it would not be good to be drinking on your way into work in the car, though its dificult to cause an accident at a speed of 1.2 mph (now I am only messing lads no drinking and driving), though I would say having to spend your morning every morning on the M50 would drive anyone to drink (if you will forgive the pun).
You know milkenie, the last time I was up it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes to get from the red cow to the exit for blanchardstown I mean its just beyond a joke, how does anyone cope with having to travel on that thing every day???

Last week I had to travel to Athy, it took me over an hour to exit the M50 and get on the N7. I agree overall it has been great the prosperity that Ireland has experienced and I can raise my daughters knowing that they will not need to leave the way my parents had to, but the absolute squander and mismanagement of money the way this government has is a sin, and then to reward themselves with a 14% raise¦..beyond a joke.
