Take 'Benylin for Dry Coughs' - the original, not the non drowsy. It literally knocks you out for eight hours straight and gives you a very deep dreamless sleep. Note: dont take it til you're in bed as it literally knocks you out in a couple of minutes, take 2 swigs (forget the spoon!) and make sure you can have all 8 hours as you wont surface before then! You'll wake up feeling a LOT better but with a mouth that tastes like the bottom of a parrots cage! (Ik side effect!) :-2

Sweet dreams! :-6

HELP! My wife is a chronic insomniac and has been through the sleep clinic thing, herbal remedies, Ambien and is thinking agout trying the new Lunesta. She is not keen on taking anything habit forming for any length of time. She has trouble getting to sleep and I have trouble staying asleep.

lol, have you tried reading that literary classic Mrs. Dalloway? Put me to sleep within a few pages. The sentences are so beautifully evocative, so beautifully eloquant and so damn, damn long! my brain went into automatic 'shut-down' mode and my eyelids followed suit not long after. :wah: Best non-pharmaceutical sleep inducer I ever had.

HELP!The problem's staring you in the face LC, switch the computer off & wind down naturally.

I find that if i have been on FG switch it off & go to bed, i dont sleep straight away because i think about other peoples problems.

Its a vicious circle, you can't sleep cos you're wound up, so you go back on the computer and so back to square one.

This is crazy advice, but may work. TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT YOU CAN`T SLEEP, since lying awake worrying about it actually makes the problem worse. Avoid alcohol or any sort of liquid about 2 hours before bedtime, learn self-hypnosis or relaxation techniques, adjust to your own sleeping pattern if it`s at all possible within the confines of your lifestyle (eg, I always doze off for 20 or 30 minutes each afternoon, so what, it`s not the end of the world! Then I may go to bed at 10PM if I `m really tired on one day or stay up until 1 or 2 in the morning if I `m stimulated watching a film or talking, etc) But as I say, the best advice is, please don`t worry about not getting enough sleep. Then you will just be tired enough to drop off naturally. Good luck!

Interesting topic, I suffered insomnia some years back when I was battling with some personal problems. Now I sleep fine but my heart goes out to all those who are having problem with sleep. I know how tough it could get cause I've been there. Worse still is that sleeping pills seem to do more harm than good considering there addictive effects.

just a quick note on the cough mixture idea on the last page, i once had flu & rather than take a spoonful as it said (naughty buttercup) i took a few swigs from the bottle, yes i did sleep but during that sleep i dreamt i had been wrapped in cling film & a huge scary looking nurse was coming towards me with a 3 foot needle full of green stuff ready to inject me, my friend who likes to analyse dreams said that was just the flu working its way out my system, well it was terrifing

not one i'd recomend lc although i cant imagine any nurse scaring you, how are you with needles

LC go visit your Dr. for starters, in light of your medical history, I think that would be a good start. There are some good sleep pills they can reccomend that are not habit forming, Adavan I think it is called is very mild, and half used to work for me. And I took them for only 3 months and all that did was allow me to sleep those three months better and get back into a routine of a good nite sleep and then I went off. YOu just need some good solid sleep under your belt girl.

If that fails, hot bath, glass of wine and soothing music and keep clear of the computer, clear your mind before you get ready for bed. And like John said, don't think about the fact you can't sleep therefore you won't sleep, tons of truth to that.

Hey, LC...As I was reading, I kept thinking, "Someone has to say something about NOT taking sleep aids till you talk to your Dr.!!!!" Way to go Minks!

I've been having trouble falling asleep lately, too. My brain won't shut down, I just keep going in circles...weird.

There's a goofy-sounding relaxation "technique" that I have tried, and had a bit of success with:

Lying in bed, on your back, start from your toes and flex the muscles in your feet. Concentrate on feeling the muscles tense, hold for a few seconds and relax. Then go up to your calves, tighten those muscles, hold it a few seconds, and relax. Work your way up your whole body, tensing and relaxing each group of muscles and really focusing on feeling tension slide out of you. Sometimes it takes me a second run-through, but it really has helped me fall asleep!

And make sure you go to the Dr.'s before you start popping pills, dammit!!

Here in canada, you have to get a perscription for sleeping pills and you're limited to how many you get. This keeps you going back to the dr. And I thank my dr always for her wisdom and only allowing me to take them for 3 months. It was her who told me, you just have to break the sleepness cycle for the average problem sleeper. Chronic sleep issues are another story.

From the "Trouble sleeping" thread in February:

Abbey's Mom had the right idea... but you don't have to drink warm milk.

Calcium has been called "Nature's Greatest Tranquilizer". Buy a bottle

of calcium tablets and take two when you wake up in the middle of the night.

Other things I do/have done...

It's a toughie, but give up ALL caffeine, and if you can't do that, no

caffeine after about noon.

No exercise within about 6 hours of going to bed. Exercise is good but

get it earlier.

Go to bed and get up about the same time every day. Even on weekends.

If you feel you MUST sleep in on weekends, limit it to no more than an

hour or so past your usual wake-up time.

Save the bed for sleeping and sex and that's it, no tv going before you

go to sleep.

Beware of outside stimulus. I for a while thought I was going to have to

give up Monday Night Football, too much excitement too late at night.

And I did give up (about 5 years ago) listening to music. Sometimes,

early in the day, I can still get away with some. I keep my hand poised

over the "mute" button on the remote, to avoid catchy commercial

jingles, 'cause I will sing 'em forever.

Keep a pad of paper and a pen by your bed, and when you wake up

thinking about something, WRITE IT DOWN. While you are writing,

try and visualize the thoughts leaving your head, travelling down your

arm, through the pen onto the paper. This way your brain think's it's

taken care of whatever. Might help you stop thinking about it.

Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. A "white noise" generator

helps some people. (Ocean waves, etc.)

On the caffeine thing, beware "hidden" caffeine, colas aren't the only

drink with caffeine in them. And watch painkillers like Extra-Strength

Excedrin, it has a lot in it.

Watch your food intake. Should have your last meal about 6 hours

before sleep. If it's a large, regular meal that is. Small snack later

on is okay.

Beware of trying for too much sleep, you need less as you get older,

but 7 or 8 hours is plenty.

(Also, avoid alcohol, can wake you up after your blood sugar drops!)

And I wish you much luck in dealing with this!! When I get a good

night's sleep, I feel I can conquer the world!!
