DO YOU BELIEVE ? YOU WILL...

This test is not for the feint hearted, not for the weak willed. You must be ready to face the evil within: everything you know to be bad, every disgusting thought you have ever had. All will show themselves to you, you must be strong, you must know that you can win - Faith in God will overcome your every sin.

The Enlightenment

1) You must be alone in your home.

2) You must unplug all items that emitt noise. (TV, Radio, etc)

3) You must ensure that all lighting within the house is turnt off.

4) After lighting a small candle, you must go to the highest, smallest room.

5) You must remove every bulb or electric light from the room.

6) You must sit infront of a dressing table, or place a mirror on a table/cabinet that you can sit infront of.

7) Your face must be a hand's span from the mirror. To obtain this distance, place your thumb on your nose and spread your hand so that your little finger just touches the mirror.

8) From this position, place the small candle between you and the mirror. Prepare.

9) Look directly into your eyes. Keep looking, your face will become blurred, this is the natural course of events. However, keep your concentration, remain focused. If you become scared, ask God to help you, ask God to let you see.

10) That's all you have to do, and for those of you who can remain in this position for five minutes or more, will see why you need to have faith in God Almighty.

11) Remember to tell your friends! This test is free!

This is a Rosicrucian exercise.

They just replace the word "God" with something else.

That sounds boring and not too effective. Anyway we used to summon the ghost of um, Mary something, can't remember her name off hand but I think she was the one who died at sea We summoned her in the girl's bathroom by turning off all the lights and staring into the mirror for as long as we could without moving. Was rather spooky back in elementary school.

I suppose my nature of skipping over the schlocky bits prevented me from finding the OP offensive or ridiculous. There is usually a core belief that I can recognise in any religious rite, be it hokey or not.

Yeah, I think it was about 25 years ago that I stopped being afraid of my dark side. Good and evil. Love 'em both.

Some of us, I think, take exception to the implication that we're in dark, that you understand the nature of the dark and that your unsolicited help might in some way enlighten us. Should we not try to reach an understanding before we resort to forcibly educating each other?

But faith in God will overcome your every sin, KB. Damn that's such a nauseating concept, it really is. I don't want them labelled as sins at all, they're experiences. If they have to be labelled sins I want them in balance with my non-sins, not overcome or eliminated - or, most especially, not forgiven. Any paternalist god I meet in my travels will have my derisive tongue poked at him. I brought my own kids up to be extremely wary of doing what I told them to do so any god that claims me can be at least that rational.

Here's my definition for the week - no paternalist god is capable of love.

My faith is strong. If it wasn't I'd jumped off a bridge by now. I have no problem with a paternalistic God. None at all, but I also believe that he made us the way we are knowing full well we would not be perfect, but that striving to still love our fellow man regardless of the ways of the world is all he asks.

Romans 3:10. As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one.

I don't understand the reactions here. I have seen you guys be considerate to complete assholes, even conversing with them over religion and Nazis and all kinds of things so why are you being rude to this person?

I also disagree with some of the comments here. I don't like being preached to either, yet I see some of that from some of you. What gives with that?

For what it's worth, I saw a medium once in a group environment. She was quite well known then in the Sedona area and becoming known in other states but danged if I can remember her name after all these years. She called on her spirit guide to come forth and give us a message for the coming new years. A lamp with a red bulb was used. I'm sure you guys know how that can distort a face. And I was looking for the trick too. I watched her face slowly change from a young woman into that of an old woman within about about five minutes' time. I attributed it at first to the red light or some magician trick but after a while I had to give that up. I suspect that is probably similar to what this new person is telling us.

What touched your nerves with this one? Was it being told what God wants or that we need to have faith from a person we don't even know? Was it that this person didn't introduce him or herself? Something else?

The lack of intro, the presumption, and the glib filth of the message. Oh, and having "hiv" as part of her username didn't help my mood either.

An interesting point. The word faith is a translation of "pistis" and according to some translators it would be better translated as "trust" rather than faith. Their feeling is that pistis has nothing to do with belief but points to a relationship.

What did I miss in the thread? I read back as far as when I posted and can't figure out how you all started talking seriously. Was I not serious enough at the start of the discussion?

What does paternalistic mean?

Personally I wasn't deciding whether I would try to replicate this meditative exercise when I first read it. I thought, hmm, I will respond to this thread because I'm lonely bored and don't want to do anything else. So I did. Why the seriousness about it? Well maybe some would think it's demonic or something, is that it? Don't people know how they feel about stuff? Do they always feel so threatened? Well okay if that's it, I guess I will not judge your inferior ways.

We talk about meaningless things on the internet. This is the way of it.

Which is not my experience of the divine at all. No tending, no sparing, no gently, no rescue and no mercy but if you had all that it would be paternalistic.

Hi spot,

I thought what you wrote contradicted itself. The Lyte quote and that which you experienced-- no tending, no sparing, no gentleness, no rescue nor mercy-- how you defined paternalistic somehow makes me feel the word 'paternalistic' is used negatively in the prior posts on this thread, but only because of your experience of the paternal nature of your personal experience of paternalism. So my question to you might now be, do you feel paternalism to be negative or positive as referenced in the above posts? If so or not, would you so kindly remind me of the point of the thread to begin with, as I've forgotten it after writing this response, haha.

If you saw self-contradiction then I have badly expressed myself as usual.

The paternalism is expressed in the OP's insistence that the experimenter "will see why you need to have faith in God Almighty". Any almighty god who will conditionally "overcome your every sin" is definitively paternalist and evil, not good. I know what's best for you, This hurts me more than it hurts you, When you reach my age you'll thank me for doing this? Who needs a parent like that, divine or biological.

okay I understand that term better now. but how is it related to the OP's insistence that the experimenter need the faith of God to endure his or her meditation or reflection on self? that part about a conditional forgiveness of sin, or love, of God never agreed with me. that idea that God's love is conditional is a crock to begin with.

the thread? maybe I just don't get it (shakes head slowly back and forth). oh well will not be the first time.
