ISLAND PARADISE TO BE SUNK!

In a shock decision announced by Northumberland County Council today, Coquet Island, the well known landmark off the coast of Amble, is to be scuppered. The decision has been taken as part of a cost cutting initiative by the council, but has provoked outrage among many Northumbrians who used the venue as a holiday resort. Roland Pie, a spokesman for the Council had this to say about the decision, "Following Thursdays finance meeting at County Hall, it has been decided that Coquet Island should no longer be kept afloat. This is a decision that has not been taken lightly - believe you me, We have decided that the island is simply no longer economically viable, due to the increased cost of replacing the sea birds that are continually falling off. The loss of carrot storage due to erosion also means we can no longer keep the island stocked with rabbits. It has therefore been decided that on Saturday the 16th of January, Four large holes will be drilled into the island, and it will be allowed to sink. We understand the concerns of the local people, but we believe that in the long run, this decision will be to the benefit of the community - It will mean more money can be spent on town improvements, and will stop the local young people from swimming over there and using the island as a Rave venue" One local resident, Mrs. Portly-Fingers of Edwin street, Amble, has set up a demonstration at the waters edge - chanting slogans and waving placards at anyone foolish enough to come by. She had this to say of Mr. Pie: "The man's a fool! He doesn't understand the local people at all. Me and my husband have spent the last three summers on the island, and we love it! I don't see why it has to be sunk, just to save a few pence. "Her neighbour, Mrs. Hun added: "I like the little ones, with the chocolate fingers! " but we decided to ignore her as she is mad. Whatever happens to the island, it is clear that the people of Amble will not forgive Mr. Pie and his council for their actions.:wah:
