I well remember the controversy at the time with born again Christians up in arms trying to ban it as sacrilegious. Some of the lyrics in the film were changed to keep them happy. The words for jesus christ superstar were often changed from jesus christ superstar who do you think you are to walks like a woman and wears a bra but football supporters are often irreverent especially when singing about players in opposing teams.

Did you know that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were only 22 years old when they wrote JCS.

I always loved the song "I Don't Know How to Love Him" by Helen Reddy. I have it in my YouTube favorites collection and listen to it regularly. It's haunting and beautiful. :)

I have it in mind that I saw the Palace Theatre production and found it very impressive, but I'd listened to the record for a year by then so it was odd going to a new production knowing all the songs. I have a strong suspicion I went with Patricia - there's someone on site to whom that will be meaningful. I'd enjoyed seeing the Technicolour Dreamcoat earlier when it had been on Leicester's new stage. I walked out of Evita I was so annoyed with it. I've not been to any of the later ones.

I still think the film version captures a feel of the early 70s, it's not dated badly at all. They did a good job with that. The locations are amazing as well as the performances.

I liked it very much too!!! Can still sing quite a few of the songs. Grin. My mum was a musicals fan and I grew up with enough repertoire to sing my way from Sydney to Perth and back again... - or actually I think it was from New York to San Francisco and back - :D .. Got put out of a car once when I got to the Sound of Music... (understandable)

This was a Fun movie. I saw it at the Stattford-Ontario play festival when I was 14 years old. My Mom flew my Grandma up......first time on a plane............The only thing my Grandma had to say was...............They are naked.....Lawrence would never approve.

Lawrence was her hubby of 62 years and my Dad for 5 years.

What lovely songs!

I remember this musical. My mom loved it more than I did. I remember feeling it was a bit sacriligeous. Mind you I wasn't a Christian, nor religious, but when I was a 'tweener there was something about it that made me feel like it was twisting a sacredness. I don't feel that way now, nono.

My mom was involved in the local theater in the town I was raised, mostly things like props and costume, but I loved going with her when a play was brewing up. This particular musical was haunting and beautiful wasn't it? Even for a small community of around 20,000 to put it on, the result was wonderful.

Interesting you found it a bit sacriligeous. For me, it felt quite the opposite.
