Brown Calls off the British Election
Brown Calls off the British Election
Opinions from the British members, has he damaged himself, or done the wise thing? What about Cameron is he a potential PM or just all mouth and no trousers?

Dunno would be the honest answer.
Labour are in trouble in scotland and since it's scots MP's that give them the majority the likelihood they might lose seats is enough to worry them. Even GB's seat isn't as safe as perhaps it was. His used to be one of the most left wing in scotland but the NHS and the doing away with the Scottish regiments have angered a lot of what was diehard labour support. Having labour control the scottish executive hasn't done them a lot of good which is why they no longer do so. I think it's seen as a cop out just to hang on to power.
David Cameron might get in because people want rid of labour not because they think he will be any better.

It'll blow over fairly quickly and be forgotten - after all it was his decision to make and not an obligation to be railroaded into.
As to Cameron, he's an absolute disaster who's only idea is to badmouth the opposition.
There's not a one of them I'd trust to run a corner shop - never mind the country.
If I could think of a viable alternative the shambles we've got I'd go on the warpath tomorrow - it might be Parliament but it sure ain't Democracy.

We could always replace them with cardboard cut-outs.
I think we badly need electoral reform though I can't see either of the two main parties going for it as neither would get power.
Be interesting if we could know what he would have done if the polls hadn't changed. Also how likely it is that his cronies were talking up an election without his say so? A control freak like him letting people think?

OK it's what passes for a tory rag but even the labour rags are finding it hard to be nice. Not that anyone talkes rupert murdoch's papers seriously anyway.

They'd do a damn'd sight less damage!
Just moving to PR would do very little to remedy the situation - just lead to coalition governments clinging onto power with shoddy compromises that have nothing to do with the good of the country, just appeasing the smaller parties that shore up the bastard who's clawed his way to the top of the heap this week.
We need a method whereby the people in power are separately accountable for each of their actions - where the people can have their say on individual issues rather than giving carte blanche to the least objectionable party on the basis of their promises on a hundred different issues whilst knowing full well that the bastards will break half of them within their first year in office.
It is no good whatsoever choosing a candidate who stands for everything you believe in if they belong to a party that cracks the whip and makes them toe the party line in every vote.
Sorry, bad day, listened to PMQT and was sickened by the childish squabbling and playground points scoring from start to finish. If that's the calibre of person we have leading us then God help us.

I would argue the toss with you on PR-it has made a difference in Scotland so that for the first time in over fifty years labour lost an election. Wish we had had an election GB might have been the shortest serving prime minister in decades.
There was this recently, maybe changing the way they are funded might make them more responsive to ordinary party members. Seems to have been quietly forgotten.

From my perspective, Brown has done himself a helluva lot of damage, purely because he let the speculation (will he, won't he) go on for so long. On the other hand, I work in his constituency and the impressions I'm picking up suggest that he would have lost his seat anyway.
Cameron? Hooray Henry with brain cell removed.

Interesting. I'm a native of fife as well until I escaped:sneaky: I have a feeling most scots want to give labour a good kicking to remind them who is boss rather than because of any great support for independence per se and might vote SNP just to do that. The labour worthies I know seem to be having difficulty understanding what happened and don't quite believe it. Bit like the titanic approach to politics. we're on course and no need to panic.
