What kind of fish? My son has a pair of guppies in his room and the female is real big....is it true that the babies eyes are visible thru her stomach? Also, what do the babies need to hide in from being eaten? I suspect the parents are eating the babies faster than we are getting to see them! The male keeps chasing the female around and nipping at her coochie!!! Yikes!! Are we pregnant?! LOL

It is pretty neat watching baby fish being born. They come out in a little ball and then spring straight out.

If the male is nipping at her i'd move her to a breeding tank or just a separate bowl if that's all you have. They don't spit them all out at once all the time either, like any right thinking female would do. Watched one of mine spit them out for over a week! It was like slow motion. We put lots of the floating grass in so that they'd be able to hide.

Didn't get one of my mollies moved over in time and i walked into my house at lunch one day ..swear to god sounded like a shark attack in the adult tank! Everyone was goin for her. Got her moved and she had a few, then died. I think it was more the stress then the feeding frenzy itself. Trust me, if you have kids you won't let that happen more then once..

Thanks! This helped! So what happens if we "missed the boat" so to say?!! I think she is done having babies and they must have been eaten! Will she do this again? Have babies?!!

I am somewhat of an aquarium specialist - fresh and salt - I used to have 178 aquariums. If you have questions - I probably know the answer or can look it up in one of my 20 reference books.

Yes they are eating the babies. Go to your local pet store, buy a baby keeper, put some anacharis (plant) in it and the babies will be safe.

What do you want to know about this beautiful fish? A breeding pair needs a 50 gallon tank. They like a pH of about 6.0 (live plants will naturally lower your pH). They are shy and need lots of live plants and natural wood to hide around. They don't like very many tankmates but a cory would be fine for algae control.

i keep getting told salt for my mollies and then the next will say don't add it. what's a girl to do?

thanks a ton

I recommend about 1 teaspoon of salt per 5 gallons of water. Remember that salt does NOT evaporate with water in your tank so only add it when you do big water changes. If you have anything other than livebearers (mollies, platies, swords) in your tank you don't want to add salt. Salt will kill tetras. Most of the algae eaters can handle the amount of salt I've recommended. Also don't use table salt with iodine in it - can be fatal to fish.

I had a 30 gallon long aquarium for almost 10 years. I loved it. I had African cichlids. I never could keep babies from being eaten by dad or other fish! It was gruesome! One of my cichlids lived 9 years! I forgot all the names of the kinds I had but I regret selling it. I want another aquarium! I've had it with birds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe I'm going to agree with David 2 times in one day - the other time was outed by a lightening strike. Fish are much better than birds.

The MESS!! The MESS!!! I 'inherited' some lovebirds and a conure from a friend that died of cancer four years ago. I'm in the process of finding new more suitable homes for them. They drive me NUTS! Since they make all their racket while I'm sleeping I have so many bird related nightmares you wouldn't believe it!!!! I want another 30 gallon with smaller fish, someday.

I was agreeing with you. Fish are much better than birds. Call a Petco or Petsmart - they usually have the names of animal rescue groups - even birds - for people cannot care for their animals anymore. You can also call any of the bird shops in your area and they might have the names of bird rescue groups.

I moved them to their own tank immediately last night! thanks for the tip.

diane

p.s. you may end up regretting letting us know this about you...lol

So what you are saying is that you need some females in your tanks??!!

PS I love doing tank maintenance and balance.

Does anyone you are offering this to know how many fish they will get in the end?

You could sell them as feeders to the cichlid or salt owners. I could set you up. Probably 1 or 2 cents a fish.

I tried keeping fish but they ate all their babies and died. It depressed me.

Actually, I was sold a pleco (sp?) to keep the tank clean and he grew too big for the tank. In removing him all the sediment was stirred up and the rest of the fish got fungi dying a slow and hideous death. I would rather have flushed them. That was it for me.

You guys sound good though. You ought to try breeding the endangered species. Save the world. :wah:

Thanks so much!! And if this doesn't work, I am getting to where I think I am going to have to purchase a few little babies at Petco and literally "stage" a birth for the sakes of my 8, 5 and 3 yrs olds!!!!!! LOL
