Florida girl, 8, found alive in trash bin at landfill

. - An 8-year-old girl who had been sexually assaulted and buried under rocks in a trash bin was found alive Sunday by an officer searching a landfill, authorities said. A teenager was charged with attempted murder.

The girl had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital, they said. Hospital officials declined to comment on her condition Sunday night.

Milagro Cunningham, 17, who had been staying at the house of the girl’s godmother, was charged with attempted murder, sexual battery on a child under 12, and false imprisonment of a victim under 13 years old, police said. He was charged as an adult.

The girl was found about seven hours after she was reported missing, but authorities were still trying to determine how long she had been inside the trash bin. An Amber Alert had been issued early Sunday.

Police Sgt. Mike Hall was scouring the landfill for the girl Sunday morning when he looked inside the trash bin and saw a yellow recycling container with a lid on it. When he opened the lid, he “saw a bunch of rocks, a foot and a hand,” Sgt. Dan Boland said.

Hall then yelled out to see if the child was alive, alerting other officers to the discovery. A police lieutenant saw the girl’s finger move and officers began pulling rocks off her, Boland said.

“It certainly was a miracle that we found this girl alive,” Boland said, adding that the girl was able to talk to authorities after she was removed from the container.

The girl had been staying overnight at her godmother’s house when she disappeared, Boland said. Cunningham had lived there for about four months, but he was not related to the girl, police said.

Cunningham was questioned by police early Sunday after the girl was reported missing and told them she may have been abducted by two men in a station wagon, Boland said. Detectives re-interviewed Cunningham when the girl was found and the teen eventually confessed, Boland said.

It was not immediately known who called authorities to report the girl missing.

If we could predict the behaviour then we could fight it. It reminds me of fighting terrorists - stealth bombers in the night who prey on the helpless.

A real heads up play by the copper. I am sure scouring dumpsters is a pretty crap detail even when motivated by looking for a lost child, to have even thought of opening the sealed dustbin was great work.

How do you stop it? You can't. This is sexual behaviour it is a preference it does not go away, I am sure that there are murderers who are serving life or have even been executed that could have safely been let out of prison never to reoffend, the paedophile is a different animal. there was a series on Strangeways prison over here a few years ago and one installment was looking at the "Nonces"(sex offendors) 3 were interviewed in detail, 2 stated that they did not wish to be released as they knew they could not control their actions, the third asked for chemical castration which is not available here.

None of them could see anything wrong in their behaviour. My point is that even your dumbest murderer or robber knows it is wrong, they may not be bothered that it is but they inherently know it is. The child molesters have no such feelings.

Toss em in prison here and they are ate by the savages already in prison. Child crimes are not tolerated in prisons here. Perhaps that is "the way"

this guy is an illegal alien. he shouldn't have been here to do this crime. Grand Jury Indicts Teen Who Raped, Buried Girl Alive

POSTED: 10:20 pm EDT May 26, 2005

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The teen accused of raping an 8-year-old girl, then stuffing her into a trash bin and burying her under rocks has been indicted as an adult on a charge of attempted murder.

The Palm Beach County grand jury also indicted Milagro Cunningham Thursday on charges of attempted felony murder, sexual battery, aggravated child abuse, kidnapping and molestation. He could get up to life in prison if convicted as charged.

Cunningham, 17, allegedly snatched the girl from a bedroom in her godmother's home, where he also was staying, early Sunday morning. He covered the girl's mouth, led her outside, then stomped, punched and sexually assaulted her, according to family and police reports.

To cover up the crime, he shoved her head first into a large yellow recycle bin, covered her with cement slabs and large rocks, and then tossed the container into a 25-foot-long trash bin in a former landfill about a quarter of a mile from where the girl was staying, police said.

Cunningham's aunt had kicked him out of her home four months before and the girl's godmother, Lisa Taylor, was letting him sleep on her living room couch. The girl stayed with Taylor on weekends while her mother worked.

She spent about seven hours buried in the trash bin before she was discovered by police, who saw part of her foot and hand protruding from the debris during a desperate search.

Rescuers called her survival extraordinary. The girl was able to breathe through air pockets between the rocks. She told family that she held on because she knew someone would come for her.

When she finally heard a muffled voice above her, the girl wiggled her fingers so rescuers would see her. Soon after she was pulled from the debris, she named Cunningham as her attacker and described him, according to police.

Taylor's daughters discovered the girl was missing about 3:30 a.m. when they returned from a night out. Soon after, Cunningham came to their door with dirt streaking his shirt claiming that the girl was taken by five men in a station wagon.

He said he followed them but they got away. An Amber Alert was issued and the teen's story began unraveling as the search and questions intensified. Authorities said when confronted with the girl's claims, Cunningham confessed.

Public defender Travis Dunnington, who represented Cunningham at a hearing Monday, did not immediately return a phone call late Thursday for comment.

The two officers who found the girl have set up a college fund at local branches of Fidelity Federal Bank & Trust and ask that checks be made out to "Miracle Child of Lake Worth."

The sad fact is, LC, a mile from me, they have found so many illegal aliens and turned them loose, because they have no room for them. It's scarey. If a small town has so many, I can't imagine how many there are in bigger cities.
