His joke was the one-letter shift he'd applied to the far older "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts", a reference to "Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes" - "I fear the Greeks, even when they bring gifts" - which is said in Virgil's Aeneid by Laocoon when the Greeks presented the Trojans with a large wooden horse. The Greeks, you'll remember, infiltrated the defenses of Troy by offering mock conciliatory friendship in this way to lower the Trojans' guard, and then slaughtered the inhabitants. Beware of Greeks bearing gifts, indeed.
