does it matter what kind of wood ?

I have an electric smoker my dad gave me a few years ago..i love it..you put wood chips in the bottom to give the meat that smoked smell...what i want to know is does the different woods affect the flavor? i typically use pecan..but there are hickory and mescyte to choose from too..do any of you have smokers and can you tell a difference in the wood used or does it really matter?

I'd have thought you could, the barels a whisky is matured in makes a lot of difference to the taste and I'm sure in our local fish smoking industry fuels and type of smoking changes the taste.

HIckory and mesquite are hard woods and last longer.
