I suppose we're all in favour of disrupting Dr Haneef's life to the extent that's happened so far? The real question is whether he's going to get back to quietly serving the community, or indeed he still whether wants to.Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews said Dr Haneef would be given home detention while his visa status is considered. The 27-year-old doctor had been in custody since he was detained by police on 2 July at Brisbane airport. Mr Andrews cancelled his visa on 16 July - just hours after a magistrate granted him bail - on character grounds, which effectively kept him in detention.
That decision, as well as disputed prosecution evidence and a lengthy detention without charge under new anti-terror laws, triggered concern from both legal and civil rights groups. The case was withdrawn during a hearing at Brisbane court on Friday at the request of [Director of Public Prosecutions] Mr Bugg. He told a news conference that a review of the case found that there was no reasonable prospect of convicting Dr Haneef on the evidence available. "In the circumstances of this case I do not believe that evidence to prove the case to the requisite standard will be obtained," he said. "On my view of the matter a mistake has been made."

He's still in custody for some reason. I was about to ask why but then I remembered you have an election coming, there'll be votes in playing tough even when there's no case.
Do you expect the prosecution witnesses who lied under oath to be prosecuted, or is gilding the lily acceptable in Australian courts?Prosecutors had claimed that the doctor's SIM card had been found in the burning car that crashed into Glasgow international airport on 30 June. It later emerged the card had actually been found in a flat in Liverpool, some 300km (185 miles) from Glasgow, where his cousin lived.
Evidence was given that Dr Haneef offered no reason for trying to leave the country. Videotaped police interviews subsequently showed him explaining that had been trying to return to India to see his daughter who was born on 26 June.

As he was trying to do a month ago, before he was interrupted.
Nobody minds him being interrupted. People mind that the prosecution witnesses lied under oath. People mind that he's not had his work permit restored. People think he's become a political football to make the current administration's public image tougher than it was. People think there should be no stain left on his character, and that the prosecution witnesses concerned should be held to account as perjurors - something that rarely happens to the filth, sadly.

It's not like the country is overflowing with qualified medical personnel.
Beattie would be happy for him to return to work in Queensland.
