I find the last 2 weeks before is better, kids want the latest games etc not something that was released 6 months ago. I'm also finding that a lot of the shops start their sales a couple of weeks before, so it can be cheaper.
It's quite good now as the kids would rather have money and spend it in the sales as they know they'll get double for their dosh.
Thinking of booking a holiday for Jimbo's Xmas pressie, but shh no one tell him, it's a surprise

xmas just around the corner
This is the 1st year I'm not doing Christmas.
We're going to Vegas - the lights are up 24/7 - plenty of cheer.
I offered my family to join me - I'll pay for their rooms.

Thats nice Patsy, if I could guarentee that all my family was together I'd love that:-6
My daughter has been invited to go abroad with a friend for 2 weeks over Xmas, she's only 11, am not sure if i should let her go, I said no and she was throwing a massive wobbly, not sure what to do as i believe that we should all be together.

neffy, i would like to enjoy my non-christmas days as much as possible, please. there is nothing worse than forced generosity in a hyper consumption crazed time of year.
i would prefer no presents & double the friends/family time. they are the reason for the season in my eyes.

To merge this thread with Spot's thread on Charles Wesley, I offer you Tom Lehrer's "Hark! The Herald Tribune sings, Advertising wondrous things!"
ETA Damnit - here it is in all its glory :-
Christmas time is here, by golly,
Disapproval would be folly.
Deck the halls with hunks of holly,
Fill the cup and don't say when.
Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens,
Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens.
Even though the prospect sickens,
Brother, here we go again.
On Christmas Day you can't get sore,
Your fellow man you must adore.
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four.
Relations, sparing no expense, 'll
Send some useless old utensil,
Or a matching pen and pencil.
("Just the thing I need, how nice!")
It doesn't matter how sincere it is,
Nor how heart felt the spirit,
Sentiment will not endear it,
What's important is the price.
Hark, the Herald Tribune sings,
Advertising wondrous things.
God rest ye merry merchants,
May ye make the Yuletide pay.
Angels we have heard on high,
Tell us to go out and buy!
So, let the raucous sleighbells jingle,
Hail our dear old friend Kris Kringle,
Driving his reindeer across the sky.
Don't stand underneath when they fly by.

for the past several years, we found it works out better to give "gift cards"! one size fits all, and the color is always perfect, and they love it! our friends and relatives actually can even get upto twice the denomination of the card. as when they go to buy "whatever" it is they want after xmas, most things are now reduced to half off. so the cards can actually buy twice as much!
we do buy and gift wrap, small stocking stuffer type things. so there are actual "presents" to be exchanged between all and ripped open! the burden of trying to buy that big perfect special something for everyone is now in the hands of the card recipient who now can buy what they really want! we find it really works out well for all.

Dammit, Bryn - now see what you've done!!!! I'll be singing Tom Lehrer songs for the next few days... AGAIN ! SHEESH.
In the correct hemisphere, we celebrate Christmas twice each year. Once in December, in traditional mode, and once right now. "Christmas in July" is very fashionable. Australia has a varied population, including many people originally from the wrong hemisphere where Christmas betokeneth snowflakes, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, hot eggnog and all that kinda thing - rather than a proper Christmas where one has a barbie on the beach .. Anyway, pubs and clubs here are right now decking the halls with boughs of holly etc, lighting the yule logs and stuffing the turkey.
PS This pic is of Bondi Beach, which means the pale skinned folk there are probably English/ European backpackers, not Aussies.
