The Guardian Angels (Red Berets) Is Vigilante a bad word?

The Guardian Angels started out in the 1970s by fighting crime in New York. It's a volunteer thing. Now they are worldwide. They are not police but they fill in when the cops aren't around. The Angels consist of both men and women.

While I have nothing but respect for these people, there's a segment of the public who thinks of the Angels as nothing more than evil vigilantes.

What is your take?

I think it is a good idea

Unfortunately though you get bad people in all organisations, including the guardian angels

If I recall correctly, I contributed $500 to the Guardian Angels back in the early Nineties.

Baltimore didn't take to the Guardian Angels very well. I don't think that speaks well of the people here.

I've not come across any instance where a Guardian Angel has been arrested for overstepping lawful behaviour in a patrol, or accused of assault. Or did you mean something different? What's a bad person, in this context? A criminal? An ex-criminal? A wife-beater? An embezzler of public funds? I'd call a wife-beater a bad person, for example, but I don't see that wife-beating should automatically preclude a person from joining a volunteer public service society, where would the Church of England be if we brought in rules like that?

Hey cool, I can't form much of an opinion quite yet here about them, believe it or not we just acquired a "chapter" of them this spring. Anything I have heard regarding their intent is definately a plus in my eyes. I don't know much about them elsewhere, but I like the concept. Police here aren't too keen on them but I would like to see huge success with them. Naturally we have some rather "seedy" areas around town and a "pressence" could be a good thing. Specially when we get disturbing news about idiots stabbing the homeless :-5
