I would if they were really really much happier being in said country. Why not? Are there any other circumstances that could be affected by a "marriage"?

I say yes, because the sanctity of marriage has been corrupted as it is. I am not a big supporter of the M word, because I have never seen a healthy marriage up close & personal. It seems like a urban legend or something that died along with the 40's.

Also, those laws are to protect a country from bad houligans from outside countries setting up shop. If this person is a warm soul, and his/her life is A) better from having been in said country or B) a postitive contribution to said country, then its for the greater good to bend the rules.

ahem.

Yes I'd do it for a good friend. I'd be more concerned about the legal responsibilities I'd have then, than I would any sanctity of marriage. Marriage is what you make of it and what your heart says it is. People do it for all kinds of reasons. God would understand. So absolutely I'd do it. But it would have to be a very good friend.

Shocks man! Marriage is meant to be an institution - Who the hell wants to live in an institution!?:wah: :wah: :wah: On a slightly more serious note, it's all well and good marring somebody to help them stay in that country, but remember - marriage of convenience or not, it still gives him certain matrimonial rights. Think VERY carefully before entering into any frivilous undertakings: friendship and marriage are as different as chalk and cheese. As his wife, he would have every right to expect you to have sex with him whenever he wanted, or even worse - could you perform oral sex on a "friend" on a regular basis? A marriage is built out of love, not out of convenience.

Sorry....already married.

If I wasn't - I would really consider it as long as we had a pre-nup for finances.

Which brings me to my point :

Same sex marriages are recognised and legal here.

Would those of you who said "yes" marry a friend of the same sex to keep them in the country (imagining that your nation also recognised same sex marriage).

The union would strictly be on paper, no cohabitation or sexual act would be part of the deal. You could still pursue your heterosexual lifestyle (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Would you do it? I think I would.

I would not, but I do have a couple of invites if I ever want to live in America.

Also had an offer of marrige to stay in astralia but that was different as I would have been staying because of the woman in question as it was more than friendship. So I would not marry someone to keep them in the country or marry someone to stay in a country.
