They already do. The first 'Project Orion' in the nineteen-sixties, was a concept using nuclear bombs to push itself forwards, that would have been able to travel at 12% light speed. And with H-Bombs instead of A-Bombs, it'd probably be able to reach Alpha Centuari in just over 20 years...
