Why on earth daily? I do mine every couple of months as I forget until it's on the go slow. Some I have spoken to have never done it!

It depends very much on the operating system. Some defragment as a background activity and never need manual intervention. https://mozy.com/blog/2006/06/13/defrag-the-mozy-way shows exactly how to set XP to do that, for example. It makes far more sense than messing about by hand.

Same reason I check my tyre pressures and oil. same rerason I scan regularly for tacking cookies and viruses Just to keep things working properly.
Apart from that I have to update several programmes on my computer daily, some of them leave things all mucked up, I also use disk clean up frequently for the same reason. I don't need to do it I just do as a matter of course. Done daily it takes less than a minute anyway so is no big deal.

Yeah I guess that makes sense. I use the clean-up before I defrag. I used that link and now have it set up to defrag once a week, great tip that.

I did a cleanup and now defragmenting - it just seems to be stuck on 1% defrag - any ideas why?:-6

Do you mean it has frozen after only degragmenting 1% or it is only1% defragmenting. If the former you have a problem.
Think of your computer as a as a filing cabinet, every time you take something out-or open it up and work on it when you return it you might put it in the right drawer in the right sequence or you might not. Windows just sticks it in the most convenient place. The more paper files you use and misfile the longer and longer it takes you to find the file again as you end up going through every drawer to find where you left it.
same with windows computer files -the more you use it the more files are all over the place and the longer it takes to find it again. The speed of the computer determines how fast it can find things but the more mixed up it is the longer it takes and the computer slows down-and mixed up enough the computer freezes because it can't cope with the mess and you are screwed.

I'm running Millenium. Yup, I'm now two operating systems behind. 
Running defrag on this box is like watching moss grow, particularly if I'm not diligent about doing it every couple of weeks. I have learned that running defrag in 'safe' mode is best; the operation isn't having to argue with other processes (anti-virus, firewall, etc.) while trying to shift the data. You might try that next time.

I don't know about any other Windows and whether or not they differ but for Windows XP.
Start - Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance - Rearrange items on your hard disk etc. Also do the Disk Cleanup which is Free up Space on your Hard Disk.

Defragmenting
Defrag is only really needed when your drive gets full up. You can check the percentage, but it only really matters if everything starts to slow up badly. Its much more important to check regularly for any virus or nasties. At least every two or three days - the computer world is getting nastier.
