Post by minks »

Im terribley new to owning a kitten, never in my life owned a cat nor has anyone in my family.

But the trouble is the kitty has stopped using his box and is going in the laundry room grrrr I have cleaned it thoroughly and sprayed the area to erase the scent but I look in his box today and nooooo use. I don't know where next he may leave us a surprise.

Any tips on encouraging him back to his box. I have cleaned and scrubbed that out too over and over.

If you do not take LC's advice, why not move it to the laundry room where he seems to want to go? Also, is the litter box near his food? Some cats will not use their litter box if their food is nearby.

If available / possible, keep him in a room with ONLY his tray in it (eg, laundry room?) Then, when he has used it correctly, allow him out to be fed, etc. Repeat as necessary!

If you are using the "scoopable" litter, you might just try scooping it out

but NOT cleaning and scrubbing. Sometimes their little noses don't like the

cleaners.

Also, try using just a "basic" littler, one without any green crystals and

also unscented. Or plain try a completely different litter!

I don't suppose there's any way to find out what they were using at the

place you got him from? If you can, I'd switch to that.

To clean the places he has gone you don't want him to, do NOT use

ammonia based cleaners... like Windex or something. Try something

called Nature's Miracle, it's found at most pet stores and will really

help.

And good luck. Not having a kitty use the box is a pain.

Like Val said - sometimes if you find out what he was going in before ya got him..that helps...and if it was a farm kitty, try using a little gravel or sand..right on top of the litter..If you bought the Natural Pine stuff..my cat after many tries - would NOT use it.. This is my Dutchess - she drowned in our pool last summer...U made me miss the lil turd...

yes, i am dealing with the same stinky problem right now. bert & ernie are in the laundry room off the kitchen too. i have (2) shitters here. they love the box but spew on the wood work. they have been in there for a week. continue to clean, spray and keep small amount of food near box. too much food means lots of manure.

should be is maybe 8-10 feet away.

And Minks, thought of a couple other things... has kitty been vet checked?

Might eliminate health problems as a cause... sometimes if they associate

pain with the litter box they try somewhere (anywhere!) else.

Also, some kitties are secretive, you might try a litter box with a "hood"

that snaps down, then they can go unobserved.

You could make this Kitty litter Cake:

Kitty Litter Cake

"Great Halloween cake! You'll need a new kitty litter box, box liner and litter scoop as "props" to get the full effect with this cake!" Original recipe yield: 20 servings.

INGREDIENTS:

1 (18.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix

1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix

2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix

1 (12 ounce) package vanilla sandwich cookies

3 drops green food coloring

1 (12 ounce) package tootsie rolls

DIRECTIONS:

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to package directions (any size pan).

Prepare pudding according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup add a few drops of green food coloring and mix.

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss with 1/2 of the remaining cookie crumbs, and the chilled pudding. You probably won't need all of the pudding, you want the cake to be just moist, not soggy.

Line kitty litter box with the kitty litter liner. Put cake mixture into box.

Put half of the unwrapped tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until softened. Shape the ends so that they are no longer blunt, and curve the tootsie rolls slightly. Bury tootsie rolls randomly in the cake and sprinkle with half of the remaining cookie crumbs. Sprinkle a small amount of the green colored cookie crumbs lightly over the top.

Heat 3 or 4 of the tootsie rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle lightly with some of the green cookie crumbs. Heat the remaining tootsie rolls until pliable and shape as before. Spread all but one randomly over top of cake mixture. Sprinkle with any remaining cookie crumbs. Hang the remaining tootsie roll over side of litter box and sprinkle with a few green cookie crumbs. Serve with the pooper scooper for a gross Halloween dessert.

Stop the presses! I am an EXPERT in this subject. I've had 9 kitties over the decades and trained them all myself.

1. I find that having the kitty box in the bathroom next to the toilet at first works well. They see you modeling the behavior just like a mother. Later yo can move it to another location without too much trouble.

2. Never get a kitten younger than about 8 weeks. They haven't been trained by mommy yet, she's their best teacher.

3. This is the most critical part: GET A SQUIRTBOTTLE! Never use your hand to spank a kitten, they DO NOT have a butt, you will be hitting them on their backbone and pelvis, both of which can cause serious injury.

When the kitten does a bad thing in a bad place (no matter what, even scratching the furniture) If you can, squirt them while they are doing it. Their short term memory at this stage of development is about 10 minutes, so if you try to punish them after that, they have no idea what they've done wrong.

The water bottle works well, because they don't associate it with you. "I do a bad thing, I get wet." is the only idea they can process. That way they should never turn mean, or learn to hate humans, as they will if you hit them with your hand.

After squirting them, and feel free to squirt to an appropriate level of wetness, pick them up and tell them "NO", then take them to the litterbox and scratching post and pet them and tell them, "good kitty". This positive re-enforcement is CRITICAL. Don't just tell them what is bad, tell them what is good behavior.

This will take about two weeks to be effective, but can be used throughout the entire life of the animal.

:)

oooo good point I have changed type of litter, and did do the sanitize of his litter box. Poor kitty likely hates me now, I think I need to rush home and apologize. He was using litter when we got him and he used it with us for hmmmmm 4 months I suspect now that you pointed it out he is not liking the new litter brand.

Shall go back to the old one.

Thanks you again, no kitty is not vet checked as of yet he is just now old enough and elimination issues were brought to my attention by my co worker so that is another step on the list.

His box has a hood and sadly he was using it prior but this may be as simple as I think he does not like his new litter brand, so will aim for that too.

His litter is in a very private space and his food is in a totally other room. So that is not an issue.

ok expert guy

we do the squirt bottle thing, and it is amazingly successful, he is even responding to a resounding (nah nah) (just never seem to be around when it comes to elimination so cant catch him in the act)

Litter box in the bathroom sorry Jives I could not do it. The mere sight of the thing makes me gag, as well Ringo has reign of the house and if we leave bathroom door open in the day while away he loves to shred the toilet paper on the roll and what ever paper products are in the garbage. Plus having kitty watch me eliminate is yucky, and there is only us 2 girls in the house we don't need kitty watchin hehehehe

Yes kitty was only 6 weeks when we got him but he used the litter box immediately and just recently stopped.

Hey minks, how is this situation going? I've been away for a bit and just now found this thread. I'd have to agree with Val here, and think it is an issue for the vet. Cats that are trained for the litter pan don't just stop for no reason. Is this a male or female cat? How old and how long have you had it? (New litter may be the whole problem, too.)

Well seems mister poopie pants had issues within his own head, he is back at the box again. Maybe he hated the ex room mate ahahahaha

Ringo is male, he is hmmmm 5 months old, we have had him since he was bout 6 weeks old. Now I noticed poops in the litter agian. So am thinking...he did not like how smelly it got in there (have since removed flappy door, Pee whew, and then I cleanned it throroughly using orange scented cleaner, he may not have liked that but now I think the smell wore off and he is going horrahhhh

And NO mess in the laundry room. I think it may have been a combo of all things.
