She's right, Skittles. You were OK, right up until you muttered the disrespect under your breath. and be honest...YOU WANTED HER TO HEAR IT! LOL! And besides, who's fault was it that everyone else knew about the assignment except you? Yours, of course!

Now, if you had said, "Oh! I'm terribly sorry, Mrs. *****, I've had a very big family problem this week and I'm afraid I've been irresponsible. May I please have an extra day to complete it?" You would have gotten a big "OK".

You see, teachers expect a little irresponsibility from kids. After all, that's a trait you learn as you grow. Telling her you were irresponsible and taking the blame yourself would have been a nice surprise to her. (We rarely see personal responsibility these days.) I'm betting she would have given you another chance.

When I was younger, I got pulled over often by the police. (Hey, try driving a bright yellow 69 Camaro in a small town if you want unwarranted attention!) My usual routine was to ask the officer, "Hey! Why'd you pull me over Nazi? The guy in front of me was doin' 90! I was only doin' 85!! Seig Heil PIG!!!"

I could never figure out why I got 6 tickets instead of a warning like my friends. The problem was attitude.

Remember, a teacher is just one person trying to control 30. If 30 people want to do something, can one person stop them? No. So as teachers, we hold our power only at the pleasure of the students. One disrespectful student can destroy the teacher's control over an entire class. So we stomp on the match before we get a forest fire. Get it? That's explains her reaction.

It wasn't about the homework.....it was about challenging her authority in front of the other kids. If she let's you get away with disrespecting her to her face, in a matter of days, everyone will do it. Then she no longer has a classroom.

oh....and when I get pulled over these days? I say, "Good Morning Officer! I'm terribly sorry I was speeding! I know that was very unsafe and I have no excuse for my behavior.."

Strangely, I seem to get warnings now. ;)

I think you know the answer by now. Yeah...you deserved it. I typically level my kids when they say things like that. I don't go the ISS route. I just make them wish they would have never said anything. I let them have it in front of their friends. ISS seems a bit much...but you still deserved it. And yes, you wanted her to hear it...you just didn't want to get punished! :D

Difficult lesson to learn though...missing out on a big race and all. That stinks!

Yeah, I agree that lesson was one of the hard ones. But the main thing is....learn from it. Don't do it again.

I don't always agree with what my boss does, how do you think he'd react if I did what you did to him?

YOU'RE FIRED!!

Sorry you had to miss the race. But if you learned this lesson you won't have to miss the next. :D

Well, to draw a line under this one, I think I`ll just tell you what would have happened to you if you`d said, "Ahh, you suck!" to a teacher when I was at school. Firstly, you would have been caned with a long thin cane, either once on each hand or up to a dozen times across the backside, in full view of the whole class, just to add to the humiliation. Then, when your parents found out (either the teacher or a sneaky kid would tell them), you would get a smack or belt from them, too. In your case, you had to watch a race on TV instead of actually being there?????? I think I`d quit whilst I were ahead if I were you!!!

Yeah, and according to Jr, it's all Jimmie Johnson's fault!! :D Or could it be another case of someone not taking responsibility for their own actions? It's pervasive these days. Wanna live a better life? Make sure you own up to what you do - no more and no less. A bit of motherly advice for ya. Throw it out if you don't like it. :)

But missing the race??? Argh! I feel for ya there.

skittles2004 wrote: I asked if we even had homework she replied YES!!! I said under ears hearing"Ahh you suck" she heard me.There's a lot of "you deserved it" advice there. Let me try to balance it.

Firstly, Skittles, you're at school because you've no choice in the matter. Society demands that you get schooled somehow, or at least stay off the streets while your parents might be expected to go out to work. From that point of view, there's no automatic "yes, you must behave well there". But it gets slightly more complicated.

Two questions - Do you want to learn, and Do you want to improve your eventual job prospects?

If you answer yes to either of those, then you're getting into a moral obligation with the people educating you. The contract is, you follow their orders, and they help you get what you want.

There's no automatic duty of obedience, politeness or respect. But there is one if you sign up for the moral contract. I hope you can see that you've made a deal, and that you didn't stick to it. Could do better, must try harder.
