Senior Citizens on the move.......

The over-70s in Ireland are increasingly taking more holidays abroad each year while trips overseas by 18 to 30-year old backpacker generation is on the decrease.

In the past four years the number of foreign holidays taken by Irish Seniors has been steadily rising,according to our Central Statistics Office figures.

Cheaper flights have contributed to the greater number of trips abroad with Britain still remaining the hot favourite (We love the Brit pork pies). Other popular destinations remain the United States, France, Italy and Spain. Asia is attracting greater numbers too.

Irish women over 70s are more likely than men to travel to the United States.

Been a few times myself.... fabulous. In fact I'm going there to work for a few months on monday. Not sure exactly but a little village in the middle of nowhere near Limerick.Its not so much as the Irish Americans researching their roots, but people from the UK and Ireland are doing today in great numbers.

Good luck to the over 70s,I say; makes a change from when they were either too ill or too poor to travel in great numbers. (Oh, and even though I`m nowhere near 70 yet, I`ve just come back from a lovely `extended weekend` in Dublin; great it was, too). I understand that the older generation are also permanently emigrating in greater numbers than ever before too - from England at least - and that Spain, France and Australia are the favoured destinations!

We stayed in the TravelLodge out in Shields and came in every day. Did the Dublin City Bus Tour, past the Guinness brewery, into Phoenix Park, lot of walking up and down O`Connell Street and the University, bus ride out to Malahide and past the cemetery where Phil Lynott is buried, etc. All very pleasant.
