BBC has a spell of subtitle trouble

Post by capt_buzzard »

Sunday Times UK

There is consternation at the Vatican because the cardinals have elected a Pope who has trouble paying his bills. At least, that is the story according to the garbled BBC subtitles of coverage of his inauguration Benedict XV1 had become ''Ben Debit''.

The same subtitles suggested British voters would be well advised to barricade their doors if the Tories come to power on May 5. ''The Conservative party is in favour of attacks on house''. Andrew Marr, political editor, on the SIX O'Clock News. The subtitles had managed to turn tax into attacks.

The British Broadcasting Corporation pointed out that stenographers had to type words into their transcription machines as soon as they were spoken to produce near-simultaneous subtitles. This can caused some mistakes.
