I know it's probably just habit, but it still makes me feel good when our next door neighbour greets me with "good morning YOUNG MAN!"

um, ok you asked so I shall be blunt, personally I feel this:
-Brown noser
-(means ass kisser) usually in the workplace
-someone who is usually two faced also possesses this quality to try and divert the knife they have just put in your back, but you havent begun to feel it.
-It only means something when it's real.
-just a thought

There is a lot of middle ground with compliments. There is nothing wrong with saying something nice to cheer someone up but it's a good idea to say something realistic. I'd like to think that when I compliment someone they can believe me. Personally, I'm relieved when someone gives me constructive criticism. There is always room for improvement. On the other hand, timing is important.
I'm not known for saying what people want to hear but I do try to time criticism for when it will be most helpful.
eg) I was on the floor talking to a 'friend' on the phone because I couldn't stand up. She decided that the day had come when I needed to be told that I'm really difficult to love. Just as some friendly advice and because she was drinking. I suggested that, while I realised she had my best interests in mind, she might want to shut the hell up and save it for a time when I wasn't in extreme pain.
A more helpful thing for her to have done would have been to tell me I'll survive because I'm strong... even though it's a lie because eventually we all die.

I don't compliment people unless it's genuine. I would hope others would do the same for me.

I don't compliment too often - and if i do it would be very genuine.
I find people complimenting me - kinda routine - in their script(for those I know).
Strangers complimenting me - awkward - I always say thank you.
as far as handing out compliments - very seldom.

I try to say something unique, and not just the usual stuff.
"You look great today."
"How was your weekend?"
All pat stuff to take off on. You need to personalize it, or it isn't a compliment, it is empty words.

I loved SCTV's faux '70s talk show, "The Sammy Maudlin Show", where Sammy (Joe Flaherty) and his blubbering sidekick William B. Williams (John Candy) would launch into effusive, over the top kudos to each other and their guests to the point that they would get choked up and teary eyed.:wah:
On another fictional talk show,"The Larry Sanders Show", when somebody would gush compliments to a person, then tear 'em a new one as soon as they left the room.

I give compliments to people all the time and I'm not full of it. I love recieving compliments and so think turn about is fair play. Don't you feel good when someone says you have a beautiful smile. I love clothles, so if I see some clothing on another I fine pretty I always say how much I like it. Sometimes they smile and respond sometimes they just walk away. To bad that they have such a narrow attitude. It's not going to stop me.

i tend to compliment in situations when the ice needs to be broken (its my way of combatting my shyness), or if the person seems to need a day brightener, or if they clearly have something new about them... ok ok ok. so lots of compliments come from me.
not smarmy. sincere and full of good intentions to bridge gaps & make smiles.
(cheese alert)
