Yes its interesting, I think like most things, it has an element of truth, and also an element of a self-serving American academic argumnent that the people at the top know what they are doing in some long term way, which I am not so confident about. But certainly the assessment that the international system has changed with the emergence of very large regional power blocks, and the ending of the 1945-post war settlement world, the collapse of the soviet union, and the slow but steady re-emergence of Russia, Europe, China (which is actually emerging quite quickly), etc etc, means that the politics of world power are shifting again, whether Mr Bush really has set the agenda here, even for his own country (let alone the world) is highly questionable though. Also, yes things have changed, but yet many things remain the same, as always, but its interesting, thats for sure.

Damn. Link didn't work.
What President has had to deal with such a threat since FDR?
Every President gets bashed while in office by the opposing party.
It's about time he was recognized by a lib.
And next year we'll have a Democrat Pres riding on Dubyas coat-tails claiming that the economy is better and America is safer under their watch.
Does anyone remember the trickle down theory?
I think it's pathetic how people bitch about the guy who's in office because he was not the one they voted for.
He's your leader and earned the position.
Respect it.
That goes for the Brits as well.
no wonder I drink so much.

Just on that last point. TB is a liar, a self aggrandising toe rag and a hypocrite. He is only in power thanks to the vagaries of our electoral system which badly needs reform and over two thirds of the country did not vote for him and are opposed to this war in Iraq.
Most important of all this idea that you should respect an elected leader regardless and trust he knows what he is doing without questioning and that criticising him is unpatriotic is a very American idea and very very unbritish.
We stopped believing that one a long time ago and just don't do that. He's only our leader so long as we decide he is and any politician that expects respect because he is a politician or an MP is kidding him-or her self. Despite his delusions he is not a president with presidential powers but merely first amongst equals and remains only at the sufferance of parliament which is the real sovereign power in this country not the PM-although our noble MP's seem to forget their heritage. Any suggestion that he should be respected because he is prime minister should be met with a big raspberry but sadly I can't do sound effects.
Sort out GW yourselves, after all it's you he works for not us, we are quite capable of sorting out TB. Like maggie destroyed the tories he has destroyed the labour party and done much to alienate the voters from political parties.
You don't respect politicians and those who would be leaders rather you give them a kicking now and then to remind them who is really boss and let them rule only if they don't forget it. Respect the office and not the man is a subtle load of cobblers used to persuade people they should keep their mouths shut and not comment on what the lying bastards are up to.
