Dilemma

Post by Nomad »

I havent asked for advice much here, mainly because I think youre all crazy. But Ill take some now even though I know this is completely up to me. I wish it could be a more interesting dilemma but its all Ive got right now.

My job. I deliver stuff. Heavy stuff. A lot of it. Copy paper mainly. Downtown. I like it down there. Its always interesting. Spring is here and the girls are wearing skirts again. I like that too. But its very hard work. I move between 6-12 skids of paper a day. Each one weighs a ton. Thats up to 24,000 lbs (so you dont have to add) a day. By hand. Did I mention its hard ? My body is tired and its taken its toll.

I dont mind working hard, Ive been doing it all my days. Ive got a good attitude about it and I could keep doing it. Im in good shape but its wearing down the knees and back.

So, a new position has been created. Its a desk job and Ill be in charge of me much like I have been. It will be a one man show with a lot of responsibility, which is cool with me.

Im afraid of being bored. Thats my biggest fear. Also keeping in mind will I be able to do what Im doing in 5 yrs ? Im not sure Ill be able to so I have to consider that.

If I do take it someone will be hired for my position so I cant flip flop around if I hate the new job.

The $ are better but I do ok now, Im not particularily motivated by $. It doesnt dictate my life lets put it that way.

Thats about it in a nutshell.

Thanks in advance.

Take the desk job.

Don't get bored-find lots of stuff to do in between the down times.

1. get on the web

2. get a book to read

3. get a notebook to write

4. get a drawing pad to draw

5. check on anyone under you, so you have a breathe of fresh air daily

6. You do what you have to-they only have you prisioner 8 hours a day. The other 16 are yours.

I take stuff with me all the time-a book, a notebook, etc. I have more action then you, with kdis running around. But it is subjects for them, not me. My free periods of the day-one goes to meetings. Boring, I take my notebook. I write my poetry. My other free period-I take my walk across the street at the track. I go outside, I am among nature-it is a pretty place there, and my thoughts are my own.

Oiy getting old sucks eh.... :)

Well do you expect slow spells? What will you miss of the old job, the physical part? The girls? (I could not resisit), being outdoors? Downtown (this assuming you are not downtown anymore)?

Keep busy, go outside or at the very least away from your desk at lunch and breaks just go out and walk to keep moving and get outside.

Embrace the change mate? And Congrats on the move up.

Are you able to customize this job to suit you, have fun then and do so. Arrange all parts of it to suit yourself.

I'd say go for it - the body only lasts for so long under constant stress and the brain only lasts so long without it.

You've stretched yourself one way for years so now stretch yourself the other.

Methinks, nomad, you are feeling a little antsy because this is someting new...a change in routine. You sound a little like my hubby who is also active and a hard worker and been working all his life. To have to sit at a desk all day would not be his "cup of tea" either. I do have a desk job. Been at it for over ten years. I have learned to get up now and then, walk around, take a break outside for awhile. I also bring a good book to read when I have a chance. I sketch sometimes too. Also, play some music that you like, not loud, but so you can enjoy in the background.

There does come a time in our lives when we must realize that we have to take life a little easier than we used to. But we can certainly still enjoy it.;)

You're right.........we are a little crazy. Have to be to survive.

You are not bored doing what you've been doing for ages. You will still be "in charge of you". You seem to relish the possibilities, without being a pushy

career type. You will be "in charge of you". If the position is likely to last, I

should try it, especially if it's at all linked to your current job. If it's got some

responsibility, can you in fact be bored?

Take It Nomad.
The poolhall's a great equalizer. In the poolhall, nobody cares how old you are, how young you are, what color your skin is or how much money you've got in your pocket... It's about how you move. I remember this kid once who could move around a pool table like nobody had ever seen. Hour after hour, rack after rack, his shots just went in. The cue was part of his arm and the balls had eyes. And the thing that made him so good was... He thought he could never miss. I know, 'cause that kid was me.

Go For it Nomad, sounds like you want to, but concerned about the change...like some have already said. There are times when a desk job can be as demanding mentally as what you have now physically you may find...IF not, make sure you have internet access and get on FG and play twister with me!!:wah:

And I KNOW you weren't referring to me when you called the lot of us Crazy...I saw the small print "except Wendy"...'tis okay!!:D :-4

Sounds like it would allow you the opportunity to also take outside courses that might interest you. If you aren't exhausted every day and have a desk to work at you might find some correspondence classes that would add to your life as well.

I think she's trying to say that it surprises her when you use three syllable words.

I'd take it as humour. You need five syllable words to sound like me or spot. :)

Having an " Outside Job" is a scenarion that is difficult for those who have always worked inside to relate to. Whatever you do outside provides freedom and unsupervised mobility. Also working in the air and sunshine is sublime compared to being in a building, no matter how physically hard the work is. Its is a very difficult transition becoming someone whose time outdoors is limited. As you know, Ive been in your shoes.. in many of the same ways. Landscaping was not just something I did for a living, I loved it, and sometimes Id be like 'I cant believe I get paid to do this" However, the damage done to your body, by physicsl labor is very real. It seems to go from keeping you fit, to hurting you, overnight in the blink of an eye. As you get older, the better opportunities get fewer. You have to ( and I know you are) think of your future. I say take the new position.

A desk job with more money would seem to be a promotion versus the present, basically manual labor position that you are presently in. Turning down such an opportunity would not create a real good work history with the present employer. Don't be afraid to use your brain instead of your brawn. You can still stay in shape doing the fun stuff (raquetball). Your overall posts would seem to indicate that you have the smarts to handle a desk job. Go for it!!

Nothing wrong with change, its with the same company - same benefits - you won't lose senority. The opportunity has presented itself - I say take the new postion. This new position may lead to other opportunities.

Don't assume you'd be bored

Take the new postion - and wear your own skirt.:wah:

Good Luck

Take the job Nomie - for the sake of your knees and back!

Hubby used to do a lot (notice the space between the words people) of carpet fitting and was debating whether to keep this as part of his business, then he laid some paving slabs and knackered a knee, took weeks to heal and pretty much made the decision for him! But on the plus side it's a good indicator of when rain is coming!

Manual work gets harder as you get older, takes longer to get over things and let's face it who wants to ruin their time off/retirement for a job?

OK Nomie, big bro Cars says, GO FOR IT!!!! As others have already said, you will still keep your seniority, you know most of the people, it will be physically easier on you Bod, & what's wrong with you MAKING MORE MONEY to boot! The job may/can only be boring "if" you let it be so! Take an active roll in advancing your postion as far as it can go, it may surprise you!

As you get older, you will find that you need more money, to hire the

"younger" guys to now do things for you that you used to do! I worked in an office environment for over 40+ years, & I've got the fat a#s to prove it!

However, I made a better than satisfactoy salary all of those years, which allowed us to generously save for our retirement. While still allowing us to vacation at least 2 to 3 times a year, every year! (You do have to take some time to smell the roses along the way you know!) Now after my taking early retirement, my Wife & myself are quite comfortable financially.

So Nomie, take that better paying job, & continue to look for advancement!

The Future you save, may be you own! If you are lucky enough, retirement will one day come your way, & it would be great to be financially comfortable in it!:)
