St Georges day

Ok so are all my English compatriots planning their St George's day festivities. I myself will be swathed in the flag and seeking dragons to slay, starting with my secretary (Hillary) who is mighty peeved because her hubby has just extended a business trip to Brazil (wonder why).

I will obviously be seeking the company of like minded individuals to gather in a group and we may even do an impromptu Morris Dance, this ancient form of manly expression has been known to force even the most recalcitrant Scot to surrender !

Whatever you are up to I am sure there will be many a Hey Nonny Nonny

i read in the paper that some english naval ships out at sea werent allowed to display the st georges flag for fear of upsetting the turks......

i also unfortunately cant say that i saw a single flag out to celebrate today - in fact i dont think most people even realised what day it was

such a shame :-1

On St Georges day 1918 9 Victoria Crosses and 400 other medals for Valor were awarded for a successfull navel action at Zeebruge lasting 11 hours more medals for valour than the Army awarded for the entire war I bet those boys would not be worried about upseting johny turk

Hopefully they were flying the union flag which I would have thought the average Turk is more likely to recognise anyway. Why would they fly an english flag? If they do that then they would have to fly the Scots and Welsh as well whnich is why they have the Union flag in the first place.

The cross of St George when worn on one of Her Majesties war ships is denoteing the rank of Admiral on board.

the Cross of St George with a ball in the upper and lower canton means Rear Admiral, a Vice Admiral has one ball in the upper canton, a Full Admiral has no balls at all.

Therefore any vessel of the Royal Navy not flying the cross of St George has no admirals on board.

Just another piece of not totally usless information from a not totally useless youth.

Oh yes, the prospect of being chased by a bunch of englishmen wearing bells on their ankles and waving hankies would terrify anyone

No more than being chases by a 4'6" Australian wearing Blue and White makeup, morris dancing is a feared and respected form of unarmed combat, I have seen it empty many a pub in minutes without a drop of blood being spilt.

I too think it`s a good idea to celebrate our national St George`s Day, on 23 April,, and am pleased to see that there is a movement to have it recognised as an official bank holiday (supported by celebs such as Ian Botham!)

One thing worries me is that some people have told me that St George was actually a Palestinian and not English. Anybody know the definitive truth?

can you imagine the reaction of americans if they were told they couldnt fly 'old glory' on the 4th of july?

Pc has gone a little too far over here, methinks.

And why isnt St. Georges day a holiday here? St. Andrews and St. Davids are!!

Yes, I think one of the major complaints of English people is not that other races or nationalities celebrate their special days (good luck to them I say) but for some unknown reason the English alone are NOT allowed to celebrate St George`s Day, or even put up an English flag for fear of upsetting other people!

I'm proud of my english heritage. I speak ENGLISH. I'm totally proud of my celtic, barbarian roots! LOL! But what offends me is that people of non- english origin telling me I'm not allowed to celebrate my own heritage, while they celebrate their own in my face!
