How does one concentrate on here?

Post by Oatneal »

Not to rain on the conversation parade or anything...

But is it just me or this site filled with farrr too many animations, gifs, jpegs, and bizarre and unnecessary quotes at the end of everyone's posts?

It's like watching a never-ending cartoon with 645 million morals in it. lol.

Oh well...if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Oatneal;565970 wrote: But is it just me or this site filled with farrr too many animations, gifs, jpegs, and bizarre and unnecessary quotes at the end of everyone's posts?Okay, here's how to make the Internet (and particularly ForumGarden) easier on the eye.

I presume you use Internet Explorer. That's fine, you can continue to use that whenever you feel the need. For ForumGarden, though (and maybe anything else which gives you a headache) you can at least experiment with installing and configuring Firefox. The consequence is a screen where nothing moves that you don't want to see moving, all is restful, nothing is disharmonious (except the opinions).

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

The changes to make to the standard configuration are:

Add the "Adblock Plus" extension.https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/recommended/

This lets you right-click *any* pic on screen and say "never ever show me that again". (Firefox also blocks all Flash graphics on screen if you press shift-control-F though ForumGarden isn't a Flash-infested site).

Change the default colours to your own settings instead of those provided by the site.Tools

Options

Content

Default Font (I set this to Ariel 12)

Colours

Unset "Allow pages to choose their own colours"

(I also change the background to a light grey instead of white, and the "visted" colour to a brighter red)

OK

Advanced (this is optional from now on, but I don't like huge or tiny fonts, nor differences in font styles on the page)

Unset "Allow pages to choose their own fonts"

Change all of the font alternative to what you used for the Default Font earlier. (All of them. Or be slightly less drastic if you prefer)

OK

OKAnd that's it. If you bring up ForumGarden it will still have pictures galore but now you can right-click anything that moves or is large and tell it to go away, it won't ever re-appear. If you drag the address bar to the Bookmark toolbar you'll always have a clickable icon to get back here with. If you right-click the new tab you can change the title property to something short to take less room on the toolbar.

On ForumGarden / My Settings / Edit Options I unset Show Signatures, but that's just because I'm antisocial. I also right-clicked the top banner and blocked that, it was taking up too much screen space.

You can, at that point, just use Firefox to access ForumGarden while keeping Internet Explorer up for everything else. I tend not to bring Internet Explorer up unless I have a good reason to, but that's because I like the rest of the Internet to be quietened by default. If you do go to other sites with these settings you may find them degraded when looked at this way, but not the majority.

Thanks Spot!

It really wasn't bothering me THAT badly...but I appreciate the tip. Maybe I'll give Firefox a whirl to give my head a rest. lol.

I guess I'm just more interested in purely chatting with people, with no distractions.

Cheers!

Once in a while I see it on someone else's computer and wince. Making it all consistent in appearance across all sites is a goal worth aiming at. Obviously it can't be done, but it can get pretty close most of the time.

Suzy, the words "Spot, your such a nice guy" have never appeared before in human history, congratulations on inventing a new sentence.

For gods sake don't encourage the man, he'll want you to have his children next.

Spot you are an antisocial sceptic, who thinks he knows everything about everything and then some, who probably needs a damn good hand job to stop your cynicism for at least half an hour whilst you get your breath back. This half hour window should be the only time you should allow yourself to post.

Feel better now? do you feel that the world is on par again with your thoughts?

Suzy shame on you, you know his heart is strained by your comments, god damnit woman you could have killed him:lips: :D
