Interesting enough...was at a nice mexican resturant today for lunch, right across from where I was sitting a lady with her baby...and baby was hungry...she was EXTREMELY discreat, with blanket and I couldn't help but stare at the beauty of momma feeding baby...I was only able to breast feed my youngest (of 3) for 6 weeks...and I LOVED it...

To be quite honest, with all this talk of boobs being flung out left right and centre, I've never seen anyone be anything but discreet.

I only breastfed my first for 8 weeks and there is no way I would breastfeed in public..... to expose yourself in such away usually involves lots of drink and a night club hehehehehe (not that I have behaved in such a manner myself)
But have no probs with anyone else nursing their baby in public..... just felt uncomfortable myself
My biggest bug bear are the midwives who try and force the issue of breast feeding especially on young mothers...... hmmmmm this is off the subject i'll shut up!

This is the bit I am dreading and will make the difference between my BF or not. Someone told me that the midwives will want to see that I am doing it right before I come home. I have put in my notes that I want to try it but PRIVATELY, that means not having them watch me either, midwives or not, they are my boobs!
Do you think I should take the pump into hospital just in case?

I would start her on the boob as they can smell the milk and if your anything like me it's too tiring to sit with the pump for half hour, just put Jade on the boobie in private. :-6

Thanks, I'll make sure they know what I want. Bottlefed my son and never got pressured or made to feel guilty for it. I just want to be able to feed her in the night without having her screaming while her milk warms up like Ryan did. lol

If baby is hungry.....baby needs to be fed.....NOW. There is nothing wrong with draping a baby blanket over your shoulder and your breast to hide the suckling babe from the public and oogling eyes.

Yeah you should alternate the breast when starting the feeding (if you can remember..lol).
Otherwise you risk getting very sore engorged boobs and may risk losing the milk supply to that boob.

I had to stop reading some of the replies on this thread, how utterly ridiculous that feeding your baby discreetly should 'offend' people, how pathetic, believe it or not women do not want to sit and flap their boobs about for all to see just for the fun of it, they do it to feed their babies and ive never yet seen a woman do it as some described.
And no im not part of the breastfeeding gang, i bottlefed my girl for reasons personal to me but this doesnt mean im against breastfeeding, and no way would i ever ask anyone to feed their baby elsewhere, i find it hard to believe people can be so smallminded to do so.
Whether you think your boobs are there for breastfeeding or for your partner is irrelevant, at least try and show some respect for the mother who chooses to feed her child this way, why should she be made to feel like a second class citizen because some people cant just stop gawping and get on with their own lives.

Apparently you should have real the whole thread, Red, before calling any of us (me) small minded. I find your words very offensive. How would you like it if I stated that breastfeeding is for cows? I find the notion that a breastfeeding woman takes precedence over common courtesy for others to be repugnant.

I struggled to breast feed my daughter because she came early and my milk supply just didn't kick in enough, I was man-handled by one of the midwives trying to get her to latch on, had to stay in for much longer than I wanted to get the feeding sorted out, this was after a fairly traumatic birth, surgery and blood transfusions for me! However I was very disappointed that I had to give up and put her on the bottle as soon as I did, she developed asthma and excema which I am fairly sure was as a result of not getting the antibodies in the breast milk that helps prevent this.
I am very pro breast feeding but not to the point of militancy. However, I strongly support the mothers right to feed her child in a public place without any hassle from others. We do not live in a society that insists that nursing mothers stay at home until the child is weaned so why should we make a mother feel uncomfortable for just simply feeding her child.
I couldn't have breast feed in public, it was such a rigmarole that people would have been offended seeing my boob being squashed and squeezed into my poor baby's mouth! (I could probably have sold tickets for people to come look at the freaky boob!) But I would have if I could and woe betide anyone who dared to criticise me.

You've totally over reacted RG. Red was making a general comment regarding 'some' peoples attitude to 'public' breast feeding.
OK.....I had 3 kids and didn't breast feed any as it was actually dis-couraged in the '60s.
I am however pro-breast feeding if it can be mastered and I applaud any mum that perseveres to give their little ones the best start in life.
As for feeding in public I guess this can be a sensitive issue and would be accepted to a lesser or greater degree depending on where you go. We cannot know the attitudes of every human being so the best we can do is be discreet and try to judge what type of place will find it acceptable and act accordingly.....in other words be respectful and mindful of others, something which hasn't happened in this thread with all the graphics and somewhat dubious references to various parts of the male/female anatomy.....call me old fashioned......and yes I am !
Feed a baby in the toilet....ridiculous
Not showing a midwife your boob when they've already seen the 'business end' .....
Boobs kept exclusively for partners....I despair.....
Hey Ho....just my opions folks.

Opinions are fine but I resented the small minded remark.
All this talk of courtesy and respect for the mom should not exceed respect and courtesy of others is what I am trying to get at. We've gone from being discreet and classy about it (ie the bathroom in my grandmothers' and mother's day) to just doing it whenever because our dang kid's hungry and the kid comes first and to heck with anyone who doesn't agree. I don't think so. In fact that is the prevailing attitude of society for just about everything and what makes it so unpleasant for all concerned so why would this subject be any different.

Most of the posts in this thread advocate respect for those who may not wish to witness a baby being breast fed and also tolerance for a mum who has cjosen to breat feed.
I don't think our Mums or Grandmothers fed their babys in the bathroom or toilet....mine certainly didn't. My guess is that they didn't go out to restaurants so much in those days and if there were visitors in their homes then they probably 'retired' to their bedrooms....they probably did this anyway.
