'orrible tiny bugs... im my house!!!

Post by Zarzy »

... and its not the kids!

Just wondering if any of you would be able to answer a Q ...

Ive got these tiny bugs which i find from time to time (they are becoming more frequent the more i look!) in my house, i find them anywhere really, usully on the skirting board or in dark built in cupboards. My house isnt that old but i have never come accross them in my previous properties which have been newer. I really dont like creepy crwalies and the more i look for them the more i find! They are kind of creamy/brownish in colour and are tiny tiny like you would almost miss them. I know its not due to having a dirty house as im a cleanaholic.....any body else have these things or is it just me?! :)

Just to eliminate the obvious, silverfish look like this and they're around a quarter inch long.

I couldn't find a photo of Immie's cherry flapjacks though.

Silver fish tend to be present in houses which are slightly damp, whack your heating up and see if they go.

Try to take a photo and we shall play dectective :D :-6

This is a carpet beetle which is under 1/4" but still not so small that you have to squint to even see it.

If what you have is more aphid-size and red then there are big mites which could qualify.

Suzy's right, a photo would be really useful.

I've got him cornered behind the sofa at the moment, he's about two foot nose to tail and he whiffles and crouches when I walk over to see he's still alright. He didn't like the flash of the camera, that's all. I'll put him outdoors when he's calmer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booklice has more words about him.

Hiya Zarzy, I don't know what your bugs are but I thought I'd introduce myself as the farting flapjack maker - perhaps I should point out that the flapjack doesn't fart, it's someone else who did!!! (eh Suzy:sneaky: )

Nice to see someone local, I'm across the estuary with the black swans - I'll come to Warren Point and wave to you one day!:D

Please describe them in more detail.

How many legs have they?

Do they have wings?

Do they move if you breath on them?

Are they like flies, maggots, indiscernable blobs of stuff, or what?

Hi Bill,

They are really tiny its difficult to see if they have any legs or how many, they are about the size of a pin head or ever so slightly bigger. If you go to squash them they dart off really fast! You have to look specifically for them, and they come out more when its dark..........:-2

If they're that small and hard to see, perhaps they're no problem? You could

always zap them with some fly spray and use a magnifying glass....

Bed bugs are apparently becoming more of a problem. Have you been away anywhere or stayed anywhere else, as you could have picked them up and brought them home with you. Don't think of dirty places either, apparently all the top hotels have them now! ;)

I think you can tell its them if you see black dots everywhere eg, on the corners of the bottom half of the bed, where you tuck the sheets in. The black spots are their faeces. Sorry, it's gross I know! :p

Hope you find out what they are! And welcome to FG. :)

You are not alone!!!!!! I have seen them and I am freaking out!!!!!!

We just moved into our new concrete loft in Boston and I saw a couple of these teeny tiny things here and there.....now I am obsessed. I feel like they are everywhere, but I only notice them in the bathrooms (bathrooms have white tile, easier to spot the little monsters). I bleached the hell out of the floor and thought I fixed things. Now I still see them.....on the pedestal sink. On the tile wall. On the floor. God knows where else they are. I'm washing everything constantly, including myself.

They are like silverfish, only microscopic. Tinier than the head of a pin.

Please help us. I can not stand bugs- in my home anyway. Wtf are they?:-1

Ok, off to bed with my mace - just in case. *sleeping with one eye open*

Sounds like Aphids or Springtails or weevils which usually go for grain foods. Do you have plants in the house check them for Aphids. Springtails are a winter bug that show up in masses.

Have an bug person look at the, then kill them..;) Good luck..

I have the same tiny, tiny bugs in my apartment! They are definitely NOT silverfish! Anyone here who still thinks that, forget about it. The smallest silverfish is gargantuan compared to these bugs. I suspect the dust mite suggestion is closer to it. They seem to be wherever the dust is. They could also be something that followed me in from the garden. Does anyone here know, definitively, what they are? Are they harmful? What to do about them? Would really appreciate some info and advice. I'm in Santa Monica, California, USA :)

I've noticed a similar mite in my basement all over the concrete floor. I thought they might be paper mites at first and then found out there is no such thing as a 'paper' mite. I thought it didn't really matter that they were down there, but one day, I had been downstairs cleaning a while. A little later I started to itch. So I had to find out what they were and how to get rid of them without killing my pets or myself.

I read that they could be bird mites and that made sense. There was a bird nest right outside my basement door. on a crossbeam of the porch above. I had seen it in years past, but had never paid attention to my basement, I never really spent any time down there. The first batch of eggs hatched and the babies flew away, leaving the mites to look for their next meal elsewhere. In years past I had noticed that if I placed my hands on the boards above the nest, mites would rush up to greet me. They are attracted to warmth and CO2.

I had dusted my porch with Sevin Dust 5% one year and thought no more of it.

Today I moved the bird nest away from my house, I thought the bird was done with it as the babes had flown away. Little did I know she had laid four more tiny white eggs in it and now my heart aches because I messed up her perfect home. I placed it in a tree away from my house. If it's still there tomorrow I'll buy her a bird house and put the nest in it.

Some of the mites are larger than others and easier to see, I guess it's the different stages in the life cycle. The smaller ones are clearish and the bigger ones are dark. I've got one stuck between tape I hope to identify using a new usb microscope I just got, it may take a while.

I read that a good nontoxic way to kill the mites is using Windex with ammonia D. That worked on the ones I sprayed. I've got to finish clearing my basement out and then I plan on filling a garden sprayer with Windex plus a bit of Dawn dish soap and spraying the whole basement down. I used Dawn dish soap to scrub my scalp and body and that seemed to stop the itching. Something in the Dawn dish soap kills them too.

Bird mites can become resistant to pesticides exterminators use but not to Windex or Dawn.

I may never know exactly what kind of mite they are, but I do know what kills them, if I can just find them all. They seem to like to hide under things that sit on the floor and like moisture, I found a bunch around where my dehumidifier drain runs into the floor drain.

There are two different types of bird mites. One can live up to 8 months without a blood meal, the other can only live two weeks without eating. Cold usually kills them (my basement isn't heated) so maybe in years past winter has taken care of them for me or I'd probably be overrun upstairs.
