I think you need both. A certain amount of vanity is part of your self esteem. It's knowing how to balance the two that is the challange. You can't have one without the other. If you don't have some vanity, you have nothing to be humble about. Keeping the things that you are proud of in yourself to yourself, and not believing that it makes you better than anyone else, is being humble.

you have to have enough self esteem about yourself to not need other people's opinons of you to feel good about yourself...and it is not an easy thing to do , to walk humbly when others are out and out insulting you....but in the end i feel like i walk the higher road for it.....
