Basically the HD ready and HD sets give you a far better picture and you don't need a Freeview box.

Just look at the Panasonic HD range in the size TV screen you want and pick the one you like the look of.

Because they don't sell enough TV's with LG on it so they have to sell under cover:-3

A plasma TV consumes a lot of electricity, and will require expensive servicing over it's useful life. Advantage is "state of the art" picture.

Some reports I've read say tha LCD TVs have too dazzling whites and greyish blacks. They will require a replacement backlight at some point in their life.

If you just want a good TV, I'd buy a name brand CRT (cathode ray tube) set. They're cheap as chips now that plasma and LCD are the newest thing. They'll also last for decades. Otherwise, get a reasonably priced LCD set from a good manufacturer (almost any of the well known brands), but make sure you're satisfied with the colour resolution.

Bear in mind that LCD and plasma will be better, more reliable, and cheaper within a few years. Consider anything you buy now as a transitional move.

I've also heard that Samsung has reliability and quality control issues. My cousin bought a Prima LCD that came with a lousy one year warranty, then ceased working 20 days after it expired. She's had to make several calls to the Canadian distributor in British Columbia (the other side of the continent for her), only to get the runaround, and promises that they'll make follow up phone calls, which never happen.

No! I think it's IDTV (Integrated Digital TeleVision) that doesn't need a freeview box Chookie! HD ones you still have to have a provider (Sky, Cable companies) and they're only broadcasting a percentage of their schedule at the moment in HD. Don't know if and when Freeview are planning HD broadcasts...:)

There is a widely-held view that plasma is better for giant size screens but LCD preferable for smaller size. Cathode ray tubes of course are now plunging in price as manufacturers switch away from them - in fact you may find it difficult to even find the old CRTs in some stores - as we all know they are usually pretty bulky, the flat screen LCDs and plasmas take up much less room, look great and you can even hang them on the wall :D

Get a digital TV buttercup. The analogue signal in the UK will be switched off in a few years time so if you ever cancelled your Sky subscription, you will get no telly unless you have either a digital TV or a freeview box.

You might also want to consider HD ready, the picture quality is much better but it will probably be some time before HD broadcasts are the norm.

As for brands/models, would suggest researching in some sort of a magazine like What TV??? or something then go to shop and look at the ones you liked.

Alternatively move to desert island, read books have conversations...only kidding :D

Unless, for a "lifestyle" statement, you need the latest, get a second-hand CRT

TV, and aim to keep it for a year or two. If you've already got on that's more

than a few years old, then a new-ish 2nd.-hand bargain will be a step up. You

can then watch a good picture while the LCD/Plasmas catch up, and then buy

a new machine. If you've already got a good CRT TV, then just keep it for a while,

and buy a PVR with Freeview. Sky? Spit it.
