from the oxford english dictionary

pontifex // n. (pl. pontifices //)

1 = pontiff.

2 Rom. Antiq. a member of the principal college of priests in Rome.

[Latin pontifex -ficis, from pons pontis ‘bridge’ + -fex from facere ‘make’]

Pontifex Maximus // n.

(in ancient Rome) the head of the college of pontifices.

pontiff // n. (in full sovereign or supreme pontiff) RC Ch.

the Pope.

[French pontife (as pontifex)]

The roots:

I'm not a catholic either, I find the whole thing bizarre, especially the bit about him being infallible.

infallible // adj.

1 incapable of error.

2 (of a method, test, proof, etc.) unfailing; sure to succeed.

3 RC Ch. (of the Pope) unable to err in pronouncing dogma as doctrinally defined.

infallibility // n.

infallibly adv.

[Middle English from French infaillible or Late Latin infallibilis (as in-1, fallible)]

Uhh..."infallible"???? WTF??? Please, if someone can show me an infallible human, do so. Where did that come from gmc? Do Catholics actually believe he IS infallible? I am not Catholic, and really couldn't care less who the pope is, but for anyone to be considered perfect kinda makes me wonder. Anybody got some answers?

I don't think he is a good choice. Some people think that there is only one true religion and that's catholic. That is simply not true. This guy thinks the only way to heaven is being catholic. I have to scuff at that. Jesus never said catholic, go and be one. He said the only way to get to father is through me. Not Peter. This guy also is a white supremist. He worked as a notzi. Were in trouble now. Even through they have said he atoned for that. I feel that somehow with his comment about the one true religion is catholic, he still has some problems with Jewish people. This pope has big shoes to fill. I am glad I am not catholic.

In the bible it also says that god doesn't want images and rituals. He did away with ritual when jesus came down to earth. And catholic that's all you do is rituals and rules. Thank god I never got suckered into staying catholic. :-5

ROFL! Ummm....Km? That's "Nazi" not "Notzi" LOL! But , Hey, that's still the funniest spelling of it I ever saw!

And honestly? He was really a Nazi? That's absolutely incredible. If true, say goodbye to the Catholic Church. They're on their way down now!

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. "another list to hate"? And how is his list, as you call it, any different than the list other staunch conservatives have? And not all religious people "hate" those that they disagree with. You can still love someone even if you disagree with them and their views.I've never seen any religious conservative; from bin Laden to a pope to a Falwell Ever show love for anyone outside their steel fence.

He is called the Rottweiler because he was PJ"'s enforcer on such issues as birth control, abortion and homosexuality, so he going to really drag the catholic church into the 21st century, Also at 78 he is rather advanced in years, are we again going to be treated to leader of 800 million people being wheeled about and mumbling and led to believe he is sharp as a tack and making all the decisions.

I am sure i have heard this "transitional" nonsense before, you cannot have a transitional pope, it's like being a little bit pregnant, you are either pope or not. My belief is the "transitional" spin has been put on because of his age.

The good news is that he is very hard line on homosexuality, let's hope he starts by weeding out his own flock, the child abusing men of the cloth who for years have been protected by the church heirarchy.
"I have done my duty. I thank God for it!"
