~spin off~ Muck Section? Good or Bad?
I know it's admins world here but I'm just wanting to discuss opinions of a muck section added here. And please don't think I'm wanting to turn this place into another "forum", I've just seen having a venting section work really good at several forums.
Usually, it's set up either as one-on-one or open for anyone. A one-on-one is just between two people to discuss and hash out their problem with no outside interference. If someone posts in their thread, it's deleted by a mod.
An open one would be for anyone to participate in.
The adantages are that the 'muck' stays out of the open board. There's not snide remarks thrown in perfectly good threads. If a thread does go haywire, mods move it to the 'open' section for anyone to engage in (or one-on-one if two people keep hashing it out)but then the original thread is left clean of the mess. Cuts down on harrassing emails and PMs as well.
A disadvantage I see would be that people don't want to see hacking other people up. Simple fix: Don't open a muck thread. It's just like games. I rarely open game threads because I have no interest in them.
So....pros? cons? opinons? variations?

I say no-we don't need one, and it is an easy avenue to say hurtful things to others. It is bad enough to see it on regular threads, but a thread devoted entirely to this is would be horrid.

i think a muk thread would be a good idea...its not like it isn't already going on all the time on fg anyway...just put it in an apporopriate thread and stop hijacking the other ones.....lets face reality here...there are always going to be some who do not agree and have issues with eachother.....

why cant people that hate each other do it by pm , i know you run the risk of them either altering the content or posting blatent lies about their content but it could save a whole lot of nasty posts being seen by every one :-6

I dont mind seeing nasty posts to other people. Of course now that I have said that I am sure I will begin seeing my own nasty grams, Oh well that could be fun.

That would be nice wouldn't it? But it's not happened that way in the past. As a matter of fact, nasty PMs have been the topic of wars in the past around here.
And only people interested in muck threads would see it.

It will happen, just not as much as it does now. Plus, you could have mods move the fights as they occur to their own section to be continued and stop messing up the original thread.
I've also noticed once members realize their fights will be moved to the appropriate spot, they think twice about mucking up a good thread.
I just realized I added to mods jobs by about 150%. Sorry! this is all hypothetical

I think yes
a kind of isolation or quarantine, go in duke it out with who you have a beef with and LEAVE it there. Come out and participate in the regular forum business.
Let's face it many of us know who dislikes whom, and maybe this method would prevent it from infecting every other thread out there.
And hey if admin chooses they can give out warnings for those who drag it out kind of like our tarpit but the problem is that gets cleard out too often.
In my opinion if we leave these feuds to fester they have no place to explode and we get our ugly threads.
If nothing else we all agree we don't like ugly threads in FG

I think this is a good idea.
The reason it doesn't resolve in PMs is because when a member is insulted or harassed in a public thread they feel the need and, I think, deserve the right to defend themselves in a public space. It just doesn't have to be completely public.
The compost pile currently holds the warning that members aren't to pursue threads there lest they be confined to the compost pile for a time period. If that restriction was lifted regarding threads started there (not those dumped in by admin) it would be a good chance to see if it works or aggravates. As it is, the animosity has continued with only brief breaks. It is worth trying something.

Yes it may be a good idea. If a person wants/likes a Beer, they go into a bar. Likewise, if a person wants/likes Muck, they can go into the Muck section.

No disrespect dev, but i think muck should be kept off the forum full stop.
Any mudslinging should be kept to pm or the compost pile. IMO.

None taken abbey. I whole heartedly agree it should stay off of forums like this, but it does not happen that way as evident by a simple and innocent thread started just today.
Would someone explain this compost section for me? I thought I understood it's concept but maybe not.

The compost thread stays off the front page so it does'nt put potential members off (i think)

I to respect your opinion Abbs, and just have to say in the thread this spun off of, people acted out in it, and then they came around and it calmed down, I hope the hurt feelings were kept to a minimum but it certanly was far from ugly... Heck we even have Far dropping in his opinion.
Abbs it struck me as a valve to let off the steam now I hope the less frequent members felt it was ok, and saw it as somewhat successful.

spot and I get called out on a regular basis. It just gets worded as "some people" say... or "some people" act like... and then we are held to blame when we respond. I would much rather say "you got something to say to me? have it out". I hate these ridiculous games of saying something without saying it. We all know. OK? We all know when someone is being razzed or when threads are created to draw someone into an argument. I've got no problem defending what I say because I say it plain and to the person's face. I would like the courtesy returned.

perhaps it would but if anyone needs to vent in public they should know it has the potential to become www news.
Koan I am with you on that, if anyone wants to take issue with me then have at it.... I would much prefer to get it out in the open and settled once and for all.
Maybe that's a Canuck thang.

If you create a muck section, you are inviting more muck. Empty spaces have a tendancy to get filled. It also eliminates the challenge for those prone to unacceptable behavior to clean up their act. Keep muck in the open is my feeling.... then you can simply wash it away with a hose.

The best way to clean up a mess is to gather it in one place first. Like sweeping a floor, you get it in a pile then it goes into the dust pan.

Oh yes, we'd hate to be ugly to other members in a special section. Instead, we can just leave our backhanded carefully worded barbs in every discussion thread on the board, as has always been done.
*whispers* so long as we don't CALL it flaming, then it's all good.
Flaming is flaming regardless of where it's posted. The question you need to ask yourselves is do you want it in every thread, every time someone gets upset at someone else's opinions? Or do you want to call it like it is, and keep it all in the same cesspit.
Devist8 is dead on target. You may not have a flaming section here, but you are as bad as Brawl Hall with the snide remarks, even to new members. The difference being, that Brawl Hall owns that they flame, and have an acknowledged area where it's acceptable. Here, so long as you sugar coat your asinine remarks, they are accepted in every forum, and every thread.

I think it's a good idea - but, i'm not sure it would work . I prefer to do things in private but then you get accused of being a coward by not saying something out loud (thats why i keep all pms - just in case their needed) . If you say something out loud on the open board then people whinge that it should be kept private . Remember people have dfferent reasons for posting - some to get it off their chest , some to rally the troops . At the end of the day if it can be kept between the two arguing and no one else, then i think it's a good idea . I don't need others to fight my battles . If not then i don't see a point .
