Freedom of Speech and Other Countries
I'm not sure if this is the correct category to write this. But I was thinking about how we have freedom of speech here in America. And that how blessed we all are in America to live in this country compared to others. Sometimes it seems to me that people from other countries such as Europe and the middle east just cannot get the concept of freedom of speech, and actually get angry when they see Americans using that right, whether in writing or in anything else such as the media. Is it jealousy? Or is it that they don't understand? I grew up here in American, and believe me I've complained about things such as homelessness and the war. But at least I can do that. And it is exactly why I am so glad that I am an American as opposed to a European or any other country.
Any thoughts?

I think you'll find that most European countries have freedom of speech.

Perhaps rather than beating around the bush you'd like to get to the point.
Who do you feel is suppressing freedom of speech here? Surely it's fairly obvious that we can all say whatever we want here whether it's fun, offensive, zenophobic, stereotyping, inaccurate, rabble-rousing, whatever!

First off, I try not to use the kind of language that is actually encouraged over on different forums. So I am trying to tone it down here. But I can go to other forums and do as the Romans do, whether it's cursing or whateever.
But lately there are a few ppl from an Egyptian forum who seem to actually go around looking up other people and literally following them around the Internet. And it seems a bit suppressive to me. Even obsessive. Heck I wish I had that kind of free time on my hands.

We have been led to believe here in the US that we have freedom of speech. Firstly, the big bonus is that you wont get shot for speaking your mind. Which is the case in many European countries. The twist is that most of us can speak all we want to because no one is listening. The big shots who are running the country have their own agenda, and they really couldnt care less what the average american has to say.Speaking effectively, to any group of people, requires taking responsibility for what we say, being prepared to handle unfavorable responses, and handling words with care as words have the power to evoke powerful feelings.

Exercising freedom means respecting the freedom of other people as well. That is where problems tend to occur in places such as forums. I'm not convinced that you really mean to discuss women's rights in Saudi Arabia.
There are limitations as well. Inciting hatred or calling for violence usually cross the line into illegal territory.
Do as thou wilt. But remember others live by the same rule.

I am not sure if this is leading from the US-bashing thread somewhere else, but Cinamin, I am not quite sure where you are getting the idea that people in Europe do not have freedom of speech???
Come on girl, we invented the concept in the first place so your attitude is a little bit patronizing to say the least. Admittedly in the world our "Western" (not just American) values are not shared, and people have far less freedom of political or religious expression than we have here in Europe or you have in America. I am intrigued by your opinion of how we live over here, what do you think Europe is like???, do you think we live in one party socialist dictatorships?? Do you think life in Egypt or Syria is even remotely like life in Britain, Germany or Ireland or any other EU country (because it isn't you know). We are a totally different civilization to them, and the one from which your country's founders drew their heritage and ideas from. Seriously, it would be interesting to hear what you think life in other parts of the world is like, I can assure you that Western Europe is an extremely pleasant and free place in which to live, and the Eastern part is quickly catching up again as well.

Yes it was absolutely, and thank god for it as an example to everyone at the time what could be achieved without the need for monarchies, etc. But the ideas have as their basis the ideas of citizen-based republics which go back to European Classical civilization, (via the 18th century enlightenment, which the founding fathers of the US were leading exponents of, and aided in their wonderfully successful project in political freedom by the French BTW). Ultimately classical civilization is where most of the ideas for our modern Western civilization ultimately come from, including those that inspired the founding fathers of the modern USA, which is why we are all part of one civilization that is called "The Western World" as shorthand.

Freedom of Speech issit? Have a look at this (which I just posted on another thread) and tell me how i am not expressing my opinions freely?
I should first inform you all that I do not consider myself to be a "Brit" in any way, shape or form. Tha mi Albannachd.
I worry about US politics because you currently have the richest economy on the planet, your present government is run by a cretinous (and here, I am being very generous) puppet whose strings are being pulled by Halliburton. I also worry because your nation is the largest consumer of resources on the face of the earth - resources which cannot be replaced.
Now, as regards Bat-ears, if you want him, he's yours.
Tony Blair should, along with George W Bush (currently President of the USA and Commander-in-Chief of your military forces) be arraigned in the World Court and charged with War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity. They should tried, found guilty and given the apporpriate sentence. As I, like most Europeans, am opposed to the death penalty, this could lead to them and their advisers receiving sentences of uo to 15,000 years at hard labour (as distinct from "New" Labour).
Moving on to Spots post, I have rarely encountered such a farrago of utter nonsense. Himself said:- "A few essential tie-break and emergency circumstances rely on the personal initiative of the Monarch - currently Queen Elizabeth the Second , long may she reign over us [no thank you] - but other than that our constitution
The major offices she holds are Head of the Armed Services [possibly, like GW then?], Head of the Established Church , Head of the Judiciary [not in this Country], Convenor and Dismisser of Parliaments (both Houses of which sit at her authority and subject to her permission) [Do they Buggery]. They're roles which, if handed to temporary custodians, would far more often be misused by the office holder for party or class advantage. Charles has spent a lifetime, literally, being readied for continuing that constitutional position. I can see no reason at all to think he could be improved on. He has no political axe to grind, he has heirs himself [doubtful, much more likely is the fact that James Hewitt has heirs] being schooled to the same task, it's a terrible task to impose on any family but the Windsors [more correctly, they should be referred to as Saxe-Coburg-Gotha], through the vagaries of history, drew the short straw and manfully shouldered the burden.

Freedom of Speech and Other Countries
Here in America we have "some" freedom of speech of which is always shoved down our collective throat but the truth is rather Orwellian. Look up the "Animal Enterprise Terrorist Act" for an example. It's creeping in people. And I know someone here will say "we have the best country in the world because we have more freedom of speech than most countries. To me that's like being "just a little" free.

Freedom of Speech and Other Countries
I do remember in the 1960's John Lennon of the Beatles gave an interview to a British magazine where he claimed that popular musicians such as himself were more popular with kids of that generation than Jesus, in Britain no one batted an eyelid, in America there were public demonstrations, mass burnings Beatle records, and death threats being made on live TV, so there is that aspect to free speech as well, i.e. tolerance of views you don't actually agree with. To be fair, he was never actually shot for saying it, and lots of people in America obviously didn't care because they were still big Beatles fans, and they did still sell records there, but its just an example, of free speech in action, and why people should never be too smug about how great or free their country's are, we all have issues and problems, and freedom of expression is always controlled, even if you think it isn't. In all countries, whether by the government, the press, or the people themselves.

That was an excellent example of having a false sense of security regarding freedom of speech. In my comments I meant to explain that speaking your mind here even if the comments are negative or unpopular, does not carry punishment by the government. ( Which is a valuable freedom) But there is always responsibility and risk that goes with voicing opinion publicly. Using John Lennon as an example. In the music world and the artistic community he was loved, and often thought of as a genius. His free thinking and liberal attitudes were embraced by many. There were those ( not saying that the killer harboured these feelings) who ridiculed him, loathed him, even conservatives who probably feared him. Freedom of speech can be a trap that lures the innocent into revealing attitudes that make them targets for retaliation in one form or another.

There were those ( not saying that the killer harboured these feelings) who ridiculed him, loathed him, even conservatives who probably feared him. Freedom of speech can be a trap that lures the innocent into revealing attitudes that make them targets for retaliation in one form or another.
Yes I agree completely, and its a issue in every free country, not just the states, which in general has an excellent record of allowing freedom of expression.

Freedom of Speech and Other Countries
If I had spent my entire life living in New York City, I more than likely wouldnt have had such sobering thoughts even pass through my head. I left New York simply because I wanted to " Live in the Country". I didnt realize that I was leaving a very unique slice of the population, and a very liberal society behind. We are very outspoken, very flamboyant, and relatively fearless when it comes to speaking our minds. What many americans do not realize(unless they explore this huge country of ours) is that state to state our liberties and freedom to speak, varies depending on the beliefs of the local people, and the temperature of local government. Some states are commonwealths ( a fact I didnt even realize, until coming to Va.) we have antiquated laws on the books for transgressions that can put you in jail. Ive danced and laughed in bars in California with men dressed in drag. Here, homosexuals live under tremendous stress not to be found out, as they at the least would lose their jobs. In many pockets they could lose their lives.
And it is the same for many Americans with their concept of life in Europe.
Many people do not have the interest, and some not the means to visit, and really get to know what life is like, or how many liberties we share. Thats why this place offers such a tremendous opportunity to learn from each other. It can be, in many ways, like taking a trip, everyday as we get to know each other and hear about the lives we lead.

I walked out of the room after my last post, and I had a thought I couldnt resist sharing. I posted this months ago, in another thread. It has to do with my belief in hidden agendas. Its important. In regard to Freedom of Speech.
Dont you find it odd that in an economy where so many can barely afford necessities of life, that computers have become Sooooo affordable? Yeah!!
lets go to Walmart and get a computer!! EVERYONE is on the web. Dont ever fall into " The Trap" of believing that you can say whatever you want to, even here. I believe the day will come when posts on a forum will be used to determine character profiles. I believe that posts will be able to be used in court to determine intent. If " They" are looking.... we surely do not know it.
I am not a paranoid nut, and I do not eat mushrooms. I just have lived long enough to know that Free never Really means Free. PS. As we speak, thousands of americans are arranging to have dual citizenship, so that when the quiet removal of our liberties gets to the point where it becomes more apparent what the big plan was, they can escape. I have to go now, an unmarked car just pulled up outside, and men with guns are headed for my door.
