It is very sad, and I think it all boils down to the fact that people fail to realise that there is a lot of responsability that goes into owning a dog of any breed.
I think it's important to remember the evolution of dogs, where they came from and how they behaved when in their natural surroundings. Like people, I think dogs are are by and large a product of their surroundings, but they still have a little bit of the instinct and mentality of all those years ago. Therefore, it's important to realise this when you keep a dog, You need to realise that certain behaviour will provoke the pack mentality of dogs and they react to the situation accordingly. The problem is that people often fail to realise this and that is what causes attacks to happen.
I love dogs, and have had the pleasure of their company for many years, but I always new that any dog, given the right provocaion, can turn.
I am friends with a wonderful Staffordshire Terrier, Jesse, she is so gentle, loving and playfull, but I also know that if she was provoked, then she could easily turn and bite. Treat a dog with respect, and there shouldn't be any problems
