Vitamin E it or not

Post by cars »

To vitamin "E" it or not to vitamin "E" it, that is the question? My wife & I have been taking 400 units of vitamin "E" daily for the last several years. Lately many articals are being published saying that vitamin "E" is not good for you in doses more than 150 units. I have querried my family Doctor about this the last time I saw him just last week. He said it's fine continue taking the "400 units", but I still keep seeing articals stating otherwise. So looking for a "Second" opinion. Anyone else out there that has a Doctor which has same opinion and agrees with my Doctor? ("400" units vitamin "E" daily OK?)

I'd go with your gut. My doctor is pretty "modern" and progressive. He will freely admit that the information you can find online now is awesome. He appreciates it because he feels his smarter patients do a little research and have a better idea about their treatments, etc.

That being said, I believe in Ben Franklin. "Everything in moderation." Personally, I would cut back to the 150 until the smoke clears. The problem is that there are so many interactions that can take place, (and each of us metabolize drugs/vitamins differently) that it's really tough to walk the true line.

But then again - I'm not a doctor - and if he has prescribed this for you - then you should duke it out with him. (Show him the studies.)

I have mentioned the articals to my Doctor, but he still has not changed his mind.

Hence, looking for the "Second" opinion of someone else's Doctor. :-3

(Taking 150 units good possibility)

Vitamin E it or not

:driving: CARS,

I have been taking 1000 UNITS of Vitamin E since 1983. I started taking in when my doctor suggested it. I had a Breast Biopsy, all was fine. I have fiborcystic Breast. Basically that mean tissue that is lumpy, and very painful. He suggested I take Vitamin E at the time because studies had shown that it helped with this. It took about a month before I noticed any relife. I have had no pain, or any more biopsies. So for me it is a miracle pill.. !!

I have cut the IU's down to 800 a day, but take it daily. If there was a problem with it, I'm sure I would be aware of it. Have been taking it for 21 years, and will continue to do so..!! :D

P.S. LOVE YOU NEW AVITAR, VERY COOL CAR..!! :driving:

I think starting out with HIgh Doses can cause Blood Pressure increase? We don't take Vitamin E. We take oils like Flaxseed, Borage & Garlic. We take minerals and herbs too. I would have to ask my MIL about E, she is into health. We try to do what is healthy, lots of water too, we make sure we have salad with Grapeseed oil & vinegar. I would say VIt. E is good, start out slow.
Everyone has these on their face? TULIPS.

I think the basic question is absorption. If you take more than your body can absorb then where does it go? I am not aware of Vitamin E problems but you can research it if you are concerned. Sometimes there are other things you can take to help absorption. If you find a source that tells you overdose signs then you can be more aware of the proper intake level for your body. If I find a link I'll let you know.

I googled "vitamin E overdose" and found a number of sites. The best seemed to be www.drugs.com/MTM/vitamin_E.html and www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/drugs_vi ... 46,00.html the last site says doses up to and including 400 IUs is not a concern.

;) I Take Vitamin E for a specific purpose as I mentioned. For me quit the opposite happened regarding blood pressure. When I quit taking it for sometime is when my blood pressure went up. Most of my life my blood pressure has never changed 100/70. When I wasn't taking E it went up a bit 120/80.

So I guess it's just an individual thing. ;)

I do know for a fact the Vitamin is recommended for memory, it's prescribed for all Alzheimer's patients by Physicians. It is the only pill that has been proven to help, and trusted by the Medical community, and those researchers in the search to find a cure for Alzheimer's..!!

Carla, Thanks for your reply. My Doctor swears by taking Vitamin E, and so your experience bares out his belief. :)

http://www.lef.org states that you want a certain kind of vitamine E.

Their main multi does not even contain the type they perfer because the perfered type is liquid.

Many supplements just contain the alpha type of vitamine E instead of the broder spectrum.

Well, it can, you know... overdoses of "fat soluble" vitamins especially (A, D, E) can be harmful or even fatal.... overdoses of vitamins can also seriously harm unborn children - advice should be sought taking vitamin supplements if pregnant.

This was one of the worst examples of yellow journalism in the history of healthcare.

Researchers from Johns Hopkins published a meta-analysis of 19 smaller studies in the Annals of Internal medicine in Nov. of last year.

The researchers drew conclusions about vitamin E use and mortality from these 19 studies. 18 of those studies showed no statistical difference in mortality. One of the 19 showed a negative correlation. The researchers chose to report on that one study and ignored the other 18. In that study the researchers did not say that Vitamin E was the cause of death.

It has been recognized in scientific literature for many years that vitamin E does not substantially reduce mortality in people with known coronary artery disease. In other words, E won't save you if you're very sick with heart disease.

However, there is a significant body of evidence that if you're healthy, vitamin E plays a very important role in keeping you that way.

The scare tactic worked. Sales of Vitamin E nationwide have dropped precipitously since this was published. In their fear, people stopped using one of the most important tools to protect themselves.
