From memory, the UK government has read all foreign correspondence - I may perhaps only mean telegraph and Telex messages - in and out of the UK since 1915 without a break. I'd need to check to be sure - I wrote about that a while ago.

I'd be tempted to put a PS in every letter saying something insulting about snoopy governments.
