Ditto

If this site was filled with only literate, grammatically correct people I wouldn't be here. It is the ordinary folk that keep me on my toes and let me know what the problems are. A little bit of making sure of what they are saying by interpreting what is said is what makes this forum worthwhile. Just my point of view.

If I wasn't so tired and straining to read the posts I might get offended by being called ordinary folk... :wah:

Not one of us here is ordinary, we are all very individual lovely people :-6

Most people forget that their thoughts, although clear to themselves, may not be clear to others. The emotion with getting your words into the fray, oftentimes, leads you to missing that little detail of editing what you write. Not throwing the first stone. Just remarking that I have done it myself and have edited my crystal clear thoughts because they were too murky to be understood.

Because the last forum I went to, had so many rules against it, that I could barely post there without someone saying "Oi that's spam!" or some equivalent.well, you can read the terms & conditions/policy pages, but in short, it's pretty much 'i can't exactly describe what spam is, but i know it when i see it'.

there are so many ways that people can spam, it's hard to provide a thorough definition that doesn't get to the point of everythign being spam.

we recently deleted a slew of posts a user made that were basically a one liner pointing people to *their* new forum elsewhere. had they posted it just once, that would have been fine. posting the identical thing to a dozen threads is spam. the user wasn't being malicious, they simply didn't quite 'get' how the forum works.

a while back, there was an odd little post recommending people check out some text-messaging number and 'cast their vote' about something or other. it seemed a bit non-sequitur, but a little investigation showed that the person posting was actually an employee of a 'guerilla' marketing firm that does this all over the net - sign up on forums, post the one post, then vamoose. needless to say, we deleted it.

get-rich-quick schemes. 'visit my site and buy my product'. that kind of stuff. all spam.

basically, you know it when you see it. if you look around here, you'll see very little 'ick that's spam' responses. the true spam gets the living **** stomped out of it pretty quickly, and the forensic cleanup crew has all trace cleaned up in a jiffy, to further your gardening pleasure.

Try this: if the message solicits something more than your thoughts or comments, it's most likely spam.:-6

Yikes, I hope I'm not one of those people. I'm nursing sometimes when I'm here and end up typing one handed sometimes LOL.

But people who misspell very simple words don't so much drive me nuts, but make me question their credibility and intelligence.

I support you 100% Lady Cop. I did some proof reading in an earlier life with the result that spelling and grammatical errors really jump off the page at me! I pointed out errors to posters on another forum I use and finished up being appointed the forum's unofficial spellchecker!

There isn't really any excuse for sloppy posting - it's laziness IMO especially with all the aids available on a computer today.

It makes me question their spelling. I have a couple of acquaintances that are dyslexic anything but stupid just can't read and write. I have one nephew that started using different coloured paper as that helps him see properly. Many people just didn't get in to the habit of reading as children their spelling usually sucks. If I can spell big words properly does that make me more intelligent?

Having said that it does bug me as wel, I just feel the person posting has the problem so I'm not going to worry about it.

Spelling mistakes are par for the course. It is the content not the mistakes that count. If you are to dismiss a poster because of spelling errors then you won't be reading anything on this site. Everyone makes mistakes. Try and cope and ask for clarification if need be.

I knew it was wrong but didn't care enough to correct it?

I'm sorry but when I've got 300 other CVs to go through, I'm not wasting my time trying to sort out what it is the writer might have been trying to tell me.

TMC~~very good point! but i will reiterate something i said about 100 pages ago, just for my own purposes and reasoning~~when i write a report it becomes a legal document. i do not need the judge to throw it in the trash because it looks like some illiterate wrote it. it becomes part of the court record. in fact, half my cohorts ask me to write their reports for that reason. they call me at home when i'm sleeping! LOL.... the ability to write cogently DOES matter in this world, if not on this forum.

I would agree that the ability to write cogently is preferable, but the fact that half your cohorts ask you to write their reports for them shows that it is not essential as someone else can do it for them when and if required.

PS Thanks for the welcome.

I agree that when it comes to writing resumes, reports, etc. that spelling and grammar DO matter, but this thread was started about the forums. I'd rather read a post where nothing is spelled correctly, than one with million dollar words you need a dictionary for. Oops...I ended that sentence in a preposition. :sneaky:

I'd hate to see people afraid to post because they are poor spellers. The fact that some people can't spell, doesn't make their posts any less important. Just goes to show how some schools and teachers have failed to do their job.
