I always watch it - and I've seen it "in person" twice. Spectacular!

Nomad you're funny. :D

Chonsi, I watch on occasion. I am always amazed at what people can rig up on those floats and the statistics of how many petals are used on them. :)

This is what Cal Poly's float will look like, I will put up the real pic when they go on the web. All designed and made by the students, from 2 different campus, and ingeniously put together each year.

Nearly a thousand volunteers work all year long to bring this parade to the world...we love it!

I just LOVED those LLAMAS! The horse units are fun and I'm always so happy for the bands--those kids have to raise their own transportation money, so when I see them, I think of all the "back stories" which've gone on to get the kids to Colorado Blvd. on New Year's Day.

It's a fine tradition and it's wonderful to be just purely happy for two hours!

It's also SPINE TINGLING to see that bomber go overhead!

Guess you can tell where I live?

(Marie--I'm SURE I saw your friend marching along! :wah:)

Oh for the benefit of others...a guy from Rochester was one of the Storm Troopers marching with the Star Wars floats.

The horse unit from Medieval Times just went by my house and I stepped out to complement and wish them all a happy new year. They did this GRAND sweep of the arm across the chest and wished ME a "Happy New Year, My Lady!" What fun!

Then the charros came by and here are the palaminos. My dog, Lulu, is having a fit! :wah:

I don't know, Chris....it's the Tournament of Roses (or Rose Parade) in Pasadena, California.

Good luck!

Well I had a quick look around, but couldn't see any pics or clips of it, guess perhaps it's just a little too early for them yet. Thanks for the help Lulu!

Yes...the parade is just ending. The "Buffalo Soldiers" and some more charros just went clopping up my street...they're all very tired, of course...the parade route is over 5 miles, but they've been in formation since before dawn.

Good luck, Chris.

Oh LuLu, how fun! I watched in pure happiness, the Cal Poly float was great! I always like their cheering section on the corner!

The Storm Troopers, they were awesome! I saw the llamas, they were so cute! And the best part, I could see my beautiful foothills in the background, and dream of home.:-4

They had storm troopers!!?? Hahaha wow now that is worth seeing, I bet that this must have taken some preparation to organise, considering it has such a massive viewing audience.

It takes all year, Chris. The float companies will already be drawing the sketches for next year.

I know they run the contest at my old school in the spring for the theme. Then they work on the frame during summer. Half is made at one school, half at the other a hundred miles or so away. They piece it together during fall term, and decorate it starting winter break. It always fits together perfectly, those engineering majors figure it out.....................:)

I'm glad you got to see it! I've just been chatting with "The Painted Ladies." They were accompanied by some more of the "Buffalo Soldiers," who seemed very appreciative of the ladies' charms! ;) The miniature horse group clipped by, too. (I've had my own parade today, eh?)

The Cal Poly float was clever and sweet as always, wasn't it?

Another good parade!

All year!! Wow now that it some preparation all right. Do they have a certain theme running every year, or do they just design different floats that will look great?

The incoming chair gets to decide the theme for next year's parade. Each float needs to reflect that theme in some way. Some cities design and build their own floats but many use professional designers.

The floats are decorated by hundreds of volunteers...it's a tradition here for high-school kids to do it. I can't remember why, but we thought it was fun! ;)

Because the city's been staging this parade for over a hundred years, we know how to do it well. NONE of it would happen without the nearly 1000 volunteers, most of whom have been involved in the Tournament for many years.

No, there is a specific theme every year. I did not look on the site, but next year's theme is probably already up, and who is the Grand Marshall. They have had some wonderful ones over the years.

Wow Val, you got to see your horses! How exciting!
